1. PRESENT CONTINOUS
USES:
 fixed arrangements “We are meeting Pete at 5 tomorrow”

*NOT USED WITH STATIVE VERBS!

2. PRESENT SIMPLE
USES:
 for an event that always happens at the same time or is part of a timetable
„The meeting starts 10:00 on Tuesday „
„Our train leaves at 6:20.”

3. GOING TO

USES:
 plans, intentions „I am going to apply to Semmelweis”
 predictions based on some evidence „Look at those clouds, It is going to rain.”
„Manchester United are playing really well today. They are going to win this match.”

with the verbs ’go’ and ’come’ it is


common to use the present
continous instead of going to

4. WILL

USES:
 to show certainty or uncertainty (with probably, certainly, etc)
 for sudden decisions „I’ll have a steak and some mineral water, please”
 promises, warnings, threats „I will always love you”
 to make an offer „I’ll carry that bag for you”
 predictions „I think he will win”

5. SHALL
USES:
 offers and suggestions in question form ONLY IN 1ST PERSON SINGULAR OR PLURAL!
„Shall I carry that bag for you?”
„Shall we go to the cinema this evening?”

6. FUTURE CONTINOUS
USES:
 to describe an activity in progress in the future „I’ll be working at 8, I can’t phone you.”

7. FUTURE PERFECT
USES:
 to look back from the future to an earlier event „By next summer, he will have forgotten
all about it.”
