Running Head: INTERGRATION OF TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA

Introduction

This competency involves using and learning all about technology in and out of the

classroom. Whether virtual or in person, technology is a great way to help our students learn no

matter where we are. As teachers, we have had to learn to adapt and be flexible with the ever-

changing times. That being said, being able to use technology no matter where we are is a

privilege that we should try and use as much as we can. George Couros once said, “Technology

will never replace great teachers, but in the hands of a great teacher, it’s transformational.” In my

classroom, it is truly amazing to watch second graders know how to login, type and do multiple

things on their chrome book.

Rationale for Selection of Artifacts

The first artifact I chose for this competency is brain pop. Brain pop is very prevalent in

this classroom and is worth highlighting. Brain pop is an interactive website that children and

teachers alike can join and every subject and every lesson, there is an interactive video for them

to watch and do activities on. For my word study lesson during week 21, I wrote the lesson plans

and incorporated a brain pop for long u. In this brain pop, the kids are able to repeat, point and

come up to the board to answer questions based on the videos. On our A-synchronous days, the

students are still able to watch these videos and do assigned work that goes along with the topic.

They are eager to learn when these videos are incorporated and hard subjects are told in kid’s

words in these lessons. Then after the lesson, we are able to debrief and write about what we

learned. Though some may say that technology clouds the actual learning from students, I have

found that these resrouces aid in my teaching. It says it in ways, different than how I teach it,

which grasps the audience’s attentions and interests my students, to want to learn more. Research

now shows that educational technology can be successfully integrated into the K-12 educational

system in a manner that supports educational initiatives and innovations.”(Pierce, 2016)

This being said, technology supports teachers in their teaching, and I feel that brain pop is a great

educational technology tool that should be utilized.

The second artifact that I chose about technology and media is a digital word sort. With

more than one to two off days a month, I wanted to incorporate some sort of digital word sort so

they were still able to sort their words, without having to be in the classroom. I asked them to

click on my link, and when they clicked on my link, it sent them to pre-headed slides of the word

study topic we were teaching that week. They were then able to fill in their sheets of paper with

their words that they take home, and have mini tests just like if they were in class. I also could

call out words to them and they would type them out in the correct column. This was a great way

to still have students working on sound, touch and spelling, even if they could not write. Now,

every time we have an A-synchronous day, they can go back to this sheet and do it the same

way. At home, they could also sort their words, and then when they came back to school, they

will sort them again in front of me, and do this on an actual sheet of paper or white board.

Reflection on Theory and Practice

As I continue in the teaching world, technology will evolve even more. Just in the last

year with the Corona virus, not only have teachers, but administrators, students and parents have

all had to adapt to this new idea that technology is the sole way that life can still happen. As I

watched students and parents try and figure out how to navigate online school, in became clear

that it was not about me anymore; it was about continuing teaching these students even if we

were not in person. Technology played and still plays a big part in my everyday teaching as a

tool to help reinforce important lessons. “Technology in the classroom in not the end goal.

Enabling learning everywhere is the goal.” – Andrew Barras
