Many people use tax filing software to file their tax return each year. In this activity, you will have the opportunity to see
what it’s like to file a fake federal and state tax return using one of the most popular tax filing software platforms
available, TurboTax.

Part I: Set Up

1. Record the information from the attached W-2 form for Ada Singh below.

2. Follow your teacher’s instructions on setting up an account for the TurboTax Simulation. Record your email and

3. Using the information on your assigned W-2, complete the simulation to file a federal and state tax return for
your fictional person.

4. Once you have finished filing the tax returns, follow the attached instructions to “print” your returns, download
the PDF’s, save them to your google drive, and use the shareable links to attach below.

6. What do you think are some of the advantages of using tax filing software to file a tax return? What are some of
the disadvantages?
Depending on how complicated your tax situation is, it is possible to save time by filing your taxes using the
software.

7. What tips would you give someone who wants to use tax filing software for the first time? Why?
I would tell them to make sure to take their time and make sure to have all the forms and information that
they might need. This is because some of the questions can be really confusing and it can mess things up if
you get them wrong.

8. Do you think you will use tax filing software in the future to file your personal tax return? Why or why not?
I think I will use a tax filing software in the future to file my tax return if It remains free. This is because using it
can actually save some time and make things easier to understand.
