Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)

How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.

This being my last clinical rotation is very bittersweet. I feel like this rotation I was able to apply everything I have learned in school
up until this point. This rotation most accurately reflects the kind of nurse I will be as a new grad. This semester we have not been
learning new content in lecture and instead we have been learning aspects of the transition from student nurse to professional
nurse. I feel like this allowed me to pick up on some of those characteristics in my nurse at clinical more often. This will help me in
the summer when I am experiencing the transition from student to professional nurse. This clinical rotation offered me many
opportunities to practice various skills and see new things. The nurses on our unit were eager to include us in things and some of
my nurses even asked me many questions testing my knowledge! This rotation gave me exceptionally good practice as a nurse.

How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).

The first course goal is about using the nursing process to optimize client health. Every day at clinical I was able to accurately assess
my patients head to toe and plan out what they were going to need from me that day. I was able to determine their priorities
based off my assessments and implement interventions to improve their condition. I would reassess my patients after lunch to
determine if their condition had changed and make changed in my plan of care as needed. The second course goal is about the
transition from student nurse to professional nurse. Like I had said previously, I feel like because we are learning about that this
semester in lecture, I was able to notice the differences in student nurse and professional nurse more often during this rotation. I
set goals in clinical in how I wanted to practice this more since professional nurse is so close in the future for us. The third course
goal focuses on providing patient centered care. I think I did a good job with this. Although many of the patients on the unit had
similar problems/diagnoses, they many times had different priorities and I needed to individualize my interventions for each
patient. The last course goal was to engage in evidence-based practice. Many, if not all of the interventions I implemented with my
patients this semester were evidence-based practice. Some of these include wearing TEDs to improve perfusion, high falls risk
precautions like nonslip socks, and using the incentive spirometer to improve pulmonary function.

What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?

I have said many times before that I feel like the staff atmosphere on this unit was so positive. It was so positive because the nurses
on this floor loved the field of nursing they are in and were always helping others when they needed it. When I step into the
nursing field, I want to make this a priority, loving where I work. I want to be a coworker that is known for positivity and never
hesitating to help others. I think working in an environment like this will help prevent burnout and improve work life happiness. As
a new grad, I will definitely need that positive and supportive environment and I will make sure I work somewhere that has it.

How has this clinical rotation prepared you to take your licensure examination (NCLEX)?

I felt as though coming into this rotation that cardiac/perfusion has always been a weakness for me, and I feel like now it has
become a strength. This makes me feel more confident about being able to answer questions about this topic on the NCLEX. It has

also improved my medication knowledge which was also something I have always felt a bit weak in. Besides specific topics, I feel
like after this rotation my clinical judgement has improved greatly which will help me on the NCLEX narrow the answer down to the
“most right” answer.

Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was
identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).

This clinical rotation was a great learning and confidence building experience for Becca. The student who on the first day was
extremely nervous and jittery on the unit and with patients, quickly became the motivated, eager student who was confident in her
patient care. She was able to assess her patients, determine priorities and provide great patient care. Through the rotation I was
able to see Becca develop further with her nursing skills and application of the nursing process to the point where she was
independently giving nursing interventions and helping others to process information. I would say that over the course of the
clinical rotation Becca developed greatly in all 4 of the student course goals and she will be a proficient new graduate RN.
