The Gaseous State

The molar gas volume.

This is the volume occupied by one mole of a gas at a given temperature and
pressure.
At rtp, 1 mole of a gas occupies 24000cm3.
Examples.
1. Iron can be obtained by the reaction between iron (III) oxide and carbon
monoxide.

Fe2O3 +3CO →2Fe + 3CO2.

If 8g of iron (III) oxide was used in this experiment, calculate;

a) The mass of Fe formed.
b) The volume of CO used at rtp.
2. 20 cm3of a solution of hydrochloric acid of concentration 0.2 Mol/dm3
completely with excess calcium carbonate.
a) Write a balanced equation for the reaction.
b) Calculate the number of moles hydrochloric acid used.
c) Calculate the volume of carbon dioxide produced at rtp.

The ideal Gas.

These are gases that follow the ideal gas equation.
The equation is given by;
pV=nRT
where; conversions
p- pressure in pa (pascals) 1m3= 106cm3
V – volume in M3 00C=273K
n- number of moles
T- temperature in Kelvin.
R – gas constant (8.31J/mol/K)
Examples.
1. Calculate the molar mass of a gas if 2.82g of the same gas occupies a
volume of 1.26dm3 at a pressure of 103kpa and 550C.
2. A sample of nitrogen gas occupied 108 cm3 at a temperature of 25 °C and a
pressure of 1.36 × 105 Pa. Using the ideal gas equation, calculate the
number of moles of nitrogen gas in this sample.
