LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 Perform different strategies in singles vs doubles game play

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

 Badminton nets
 Rackets
 Birdies
 Court
 Sanitation bottles
Paper towel
PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
 This week will focus a bit more on doubles game play
 Singles will still be played, but doubles are used for more teamwork aspects.

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Have students come in and warm-up for 10 minutes
 Bring them in and take attendance. Go over what the schedule is for today, 10 min
which is introducing doubles game play.
Body Time
Topic:  The court has been condensed so that we can fit more 45 min
Demonstration teams onto each net.
 These courts are separated by the green tape. For
example, From the side red line to the white line
dividing the singles courts, there will be a green tape in
the middle to signify the split between the singles half
court.
 When playing doubles, it is very important to
communicate with your partner when it comes to
hitting the birdie. Since the courts are smaller, there is
a more likely of a chance that rackets can hit heads, or
other people in general.
 Today we are going to do some 1 vs 2 drill. This will be
the introduction to doubles gameplay
2
- In this drill, it is important that the singles
player is ready to return shots at a face
pace. This might be more work for the
singles player, as he/she will be covering.

Bring everyone to one court to demonstrate the activity.

Choose two students to pair up and help you with the activity.
If not, try and get one student and your teaching partner to
assist you. (The teacher is the singles player)

 In doubles there are two ways in which we rotate and

our position on the court.
 You either play side to side, or front to back.
 As the name implies, if you are playing side to side, the
areas you need to cover on the court is your side of the
half court.
 If you are playing front to back, the areas you need to
cover is either the front of the court (so all the net
shots), or the back of the court (all the clears)
 When playing doubles, if you are playing front/back,
the front player should only cover the front of the
court, where the back player should only cover the
back of the court. Do not try and force a shot that is not
meant to be yours.
 For this drill, we will be doing a 1 vs 2 front/back
game, meaning there will be groups of 3 or 4
depending on numbers. The people on the team of 2
will be the offensive team. The person in the front will
be either hitting net shots or lifts. The back player can
only drop, smash, or clear
 The singles player is responsible for setting up the
person in the back for the smash/drop or hitting net
shots for the person in front.
 It is important for the doubles pair to communicate on
who is going to take the shot. Saying something like “I
got it” tells your teammate clearly.
 Keep the rally going for as long as you can. Play to 3
points and then rotate positions. The front player will
be the singles player. The back player will rotate to the
front, and the singles player will rotate to the back.
 Run this for 10 minutes.
 After the first 10 minutes, stop everyone, and have
them switch to side to side and play/rally that way.
Run this for around 8-10 minutes as well.
 (masks will have to be on for those who are paired up)

Bring everyone back again for doubles game play. Have

students break off into groups of 4. Today we will focus on
3
playing with a teammate and playing close net shots. Games
will play until 7 points and run a kings court system. The two
middle courts will be the king and before king’s court. The
outside courts (the ones with the basketball hoops) are the
dungeon. Winning teams move up the courts closer to the
king while losing teams move down.

Run games until the end of class.

Make sure students sanitize their equipment and put them

back on the rack.

Conclusion Time
Assessment
 STEM 1/2/3
 Use attendance list to keep track.
 Walk around and observe students. Give feedback and try to get to each court.
 Students will be observed on their ability to work with a partner on the court.
