mid-1990s has focused his efforts in developing the educational system of India through SSN Trust

At a time when India had a total of 250 computers, Shiv Nadar led a young team which
passionately believed in and bet on the growth of the IT industry. That vision in 1976, born out of a
Delhi "barsaati", akin to a garage start-up, has resulted 3 decades later in a $5.7 billion global
transformational technology enterprise today. From designing India's first PC at the same time as
global IT peers in 1978; to working on the Boeing Dreamliner's Flight Management Systems now,
HCL has stayed a true Pioneer of Modern Computing. HCL's range of offerings spans Product
Engineering, Custom & Package Applications, BPO, IT Infrastructure Services, IT Hardware, Systems
Integration, and distribution of ICT products - across a wide range of focused industry verticals. The
HCL team comprises over 79,000 professionals of diverse nationalities, who operate from 31 countries
including over 500 points of presence in India. HCL has global partnerships with several leading
Fortune 1000 firms, including leading IT and Technology firms.

Early life

Shiv Nadar hails from Moolaipozhi village in the Thoothukudi district about 10 KM from
Tiruchendur town in Tamil Nadu, India and was born in the Nadar community to Sivasubramaniya
Nadar and Vamasundari Devi in 1946. His mother, Vamasundari Devi and S. P. Adithanar, founder of
Dina Thanthi were siblings. Shiv Nadar received a pre-University degree in Madurai American College
and degree in Electrical And Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology. He began his
career at Walchand Group's Cooper Engineering in Pune in 1967.Shiv Nadar is the only Indian to
establish computer systems industry in INDIA.
HCL - Evolution

Along with Ajai Chowdhry (Chairman, HCL Infosystems), Arjun Malhotra (CEO and
Chairman, Headstrong), Subhash Arora, Yogesh Vaidya and DS Puri,Shiv Nadar started Microcomp to
sell teledigital calculators in the Indian market.under the brand name "Televista.

HCL was founded later in 1976 with an investment of Rs 187,000rom the 6 founders and added
Uttar Pradesh government as a 26% equity partner. While the company focused on building a
microcomputer from scratch, it received an unexpected boon when foreign companies like IBM left the
country due to the policies adopted by the then Industrial minister George Fernandes in 1977 creating a
market space for the microcomputer in India.

In 1980, HCL ventured into the international market with the opening of Far East Computers in
Singapore to sell IT hardware. The venture reported Rs 1 million revenue in the first year and
continued to address the Singapore operations. In 1981, Rajendra Pawar, Vijay Thadani, S Rajendran
started NIIT with Nadar playing the role of investor to address the then fast growing computer
education market. Nadar remained the largest shareholder without retaining any management control.
Nadar retained his shareholding in NIIT through 2003 at least.

Through 1984, the company focused on designing microcomputers and writing custom
applications for clients on these systems. When the Indian government liberalized regulations for
import of technology, the computer market was in effect opened for adopting new global technologies.
HCL utilized the opportunity to develop Personal computers solutions (called Busybee) and UNIX
platform based solutions. In the IT hardware business, the company opened a subsidiary called HCL
office Automation that quickly became India's leader in office solutions. By 1987, HCL recorded
revenue of Rs 100 crores and featured as India's number 1 company
Achevement: Chief Executive Officer of Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL), India's largest infotech
conglomerate

Shiv Nadar is the Chief Executive Officer of Hindustan Computers Limited (HCL), India's
largest infotech conglomerate. He figures in the Forbes list of Indian billionaires.

Originally hailing from Moolaipozhi Village,Trichendur,Tutocorin District, Tamil Nadu, Shiv

Nadar moved to Delhi in 1968. He worked as an engineer with DCM Ltd. But the entrepreneur in Shiv
Nadar wanted to set up his own business. Therefore, he along with six of his colleagues launched a firm
making office products like copiers.

In late 1970s, when IBM quit India, Shiv Nadar's HCL stepped in to fill the vacuum. In 1982,
HCL came out with its first computer. Today, HCL derives 80% of its revenue from computers and
office equipment. HCL has also been spreading its global reach. Its Singapore subsidiary, Far East
Computers, achieved a breakthrough in imaging technology, which, among other applications, enables
computers to read handwritten tax returns.

HCL has adopted innovative practices to achieve growth. In the U.S, a software subsidiary,
HCL America, has reaped huge dividends by taking advantage of global time zones. Every morning,
the company's Chennai office receives software assignments from the U.S, just after work stops there
for the night. A team of Indian engineers, with salaries much lower than those of their American
counterparts, complete the jobs and send them back in the evening.

initiatives of community development & bridge the urban-rural divide in India, The foundation aims to
achieve this primarily by setting up outstanding educational institutions that provide meritorious
students from all walks of life the opportunity to receive a world-class education.

lives and the ability benefit the community and society at large. We as a foundation are trying in our

The Shiv Nadar Foundation was set up in 1996, comprising the SSN College of Engineering
(SSNCE), the SSN School of Management and Computer Applications (SoMCA) and the SSN School
of Advanced Software Engineering (SASE) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The SSNCE has, in a short span
of 10 years, become one of India’s top ten private engineering colleges (Outlook, June 07; Mint, 24
June 09). November 18, New Delhi, India: Shiv Nadar Foundation takes its unique VidyaGyan School
for rural toppers to Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) with its foundation stone laying ceremony today.
VidyaGyan, Sitapur, second of the planned three schools, will take high quality school education to
rural toppers from Central U.P. completely free, including to some backward districts of what is India’s
largest and most populous state . The Sitapur School is the second step to doing this on a scale large
enough to have tangible impact across all 71 districts of the state and transform the lives of 1000
meritorious students by early 2011. Construction is soon to begin and VidyaGyan, Sitapur is
anticipated to be open in time for the academic year 2011-12. Shiv Nadar started VidyaGyan because
we know there are many bright rural kids who do not reach their true potential simply because of no
access to quality education. I am a product of education and know that it can empower these children to
overcome their circumstances like nothing else can. I’m very proud that this social experiment is
already showing results in Bulandshahr - you can see it in the students’ eyes and the way they have
matured academically, emotionally and physically. We are very happy to bring the school to
Sitapur”.The vision of the VidyaGyan schools is to build future leaders from rural India by providing
high quality school education as a tool to bridge the rural-urban divide. In partnership with the
Government of U.P., VidyaGyan aims to select, induct and transform meritorious rural children from
economically disadvantaged backgrounds, providing th em free, world class education. The initiative
enables them to transcend the disadvantages they face and compete with their urban counterparts.
VidyaGyan also provides them the finest mentoring and nurturance to give them the opportunity to
become tomorrow’s world leaders. The Foundation hopes that this will rais e many more aspirations
and contribute to leveling the urban-rural divide and inspire many others to undertake more such
initiatives. The Shiv Nadar Foundation had inaugurated the first VidyaGyan School in August 2009, in
Bulandshahr, U.P. The VidyaGyan schools will run from the 6th to the 12th grade, scaled up each
year. Three boarding schools geographically situated to cover all 71 districts of U .P. with a capacity of
1400 students each, at full strength will nurture 4200 responsible citizen leaders.
Brief about Shiv Nadar & History-
At a time when India had a total of 250 computers, Shiv Nadar led a young team which
passionately believed in and bet on the growth of the IT industry. That vision in 1976, born out of a
Delhi "barsaati" (akin to a garage start up), has resulted 3 decades later in creating a US $ 4.7 Billion
(Rs 19,000 Crore) Global Enterprise. From designing India's first PC at the same time as global IT
peers in 1978; to working on the Boeing Dreamliner's Flight Management Systems today, HCL has
stayed a true Pioneer of Modern Computing. HCL now employs over 53,000 professionals, with a
global presence in 18 countries and a pan India presence across 360 locations. HCL's business spans IT
Hardware manufacturing & distribution, System Integration, Technology & Software services,
Business Process Outsourcing, and Infrastructure Management.
Acknowledged as a visionary by the IT industry and his peers, Shiv Nadar has often made daring
forays based on his conviction of the future. At a time when hardware was the name of the game,
Nadar foresaw the huge potential in the area of IT education & learning from which NIIT was born.
Albeit a more recent entrant in the software services space, HCL, in a short span of 7 years is already
among top Indian IT software majors and a force to reckon with for global technology giants.Shiv
Nadar firmly believes that, "If you want to empower people, give them the tools. There's enough
entrepreneurship in this country to take care of the rest." He is quick to grasp new opportunities, select
a team to transform his ideas into reality and delegate the project to competent professionals. In January
2005 Shiv Nadar received the CNBC Business Excellence award from the Prime Minister of India. In
February 2005 he was listed by "India Today" in the Power List of India's leaders from all walks of life,
for building a global IT Enterprise from scratch in 3 decades, creating valuable JVs with marquee
partners such as Deutsche Bank, and creating jobs in Belfast when India was being criticized for just
the opposite. More recently, Shiv Nadar received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award
2007 in the `Services' category for being "a doyen of the Indian IT industry and perhaps its chief
architect". The University of Madras awarded him an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Science in
November 2007, for his contribution to not just the IT industry in India, but also for his "transformation
of technological culture globally".Determined to give back to the society that nurtured him, Shiv Nadar
has been quietly supporting many critical social causes. He founded the not-for-profit SSN College of
Engineering in Chennai, which is today among the top ten private engineering colleges in India,
enabling world class higher education for students across socio-economic strata. Shiv Nadar is also
building 6 "VidyaGyan" public schools in Uttar Pradesh that will provide free, world class education to
rural children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. His belief is that quality education to a
select few will take the positive impact of education to where it can truly uplift & transform lives and
help narrow the socio-economic divide. He is an active member of the Executive Board of the Indian
School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. Concerned with the public health issues in India, Shiv Nadar is
involved with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) - working to establish standards in public
health education and to create a network of innovative world class India-relevant institutes of public
health. He also supports initiatives for the girl child and the empowerment of women.
