Reproductive Traits of Buffalo and Effect of Environment On It
Reproductive Traits of Buffalo and Effect of Environment On It
1. Introduction:
Buffalo plays a pivotal role in the agricultural economy of many Asian, European, African, and Latin
American countries. Among farm livestock buffalo is being increasingly recognized as an animal for
milk, meat, and draft. Despite its significant contribution as a multipurpose animal, this species has
received little of the care and attention which it rightly deserves. Because of its morphological and
anatomical characteristics that the buffalo is so well suited to hot and humid climates and muddy
terrain. Moreover, buffalo skin is covered with a thick epidermis, the basal cells of which contain
many melanin particles that give the skin surface its characteristic black colour (Shafie, 1985). The
melanin particles trap the ultraviolet rays and prevent them from penetrating through the dermis of
the skin to the lower tissue.
B. Animate factors:
1. Other forms of life interacting in an undesirable or fatal manner; infections, endoparasites,
ectoparasites;
2. Interaction with members of the same species: social factors;
3. Interaction with the man.
7. Remedies
a. High yielding buffaloes thus have a disadvantage over lower yielding animals, and need more
cooling facilities. The following points are guidelines to have in mind when giving advice on
management.
b. The feeding, watering and milking place should always give shade and protection from heavy
rains, either by trees or by a roof;
c. 2. Cool water either from a clean river or served in an earthen pit, helps the animals to
maintain temperature. Water trough should always be placed in the shade;
d. A paddock with trees gives a very cheap and effective protection from sun. However, the trees
may need to be protected from the buffaloes also;
e. A shelter of a simple construction with only a roof. In hot humid climates it is better not to
have walls. Walls may lead to inadequate ventilation and thereby favoring bacte-ria and mold
growth, thus making the stable unhygienic. To protect the inside from sunshine (or heavy
rain), curtains made from straw, textile or other suitable material, can be used;
f. Providing the animals with a wallow. However, the wallow should be one with clean water
and not far from the farm. Spending time walking in the sun to and from the wallowing costs
more than it saves;
g. Showering of the buffaloes with cool water for 3 minutes twice a day has proven to be an
efficient way for them to get rid of excess heat.
8. Conclusion:
As a lean meat and high milk yielding animal, buffalo have a unavoidable importance. But due to
being a environment dependent or seasonal animal it has some limitation to survive and reproduce in
normal condition. It is a crying need to reduce that limitation. If we shall cope with this problem,
buffalo will be the best alternative to cattle or beef.
