As a dynamic developing country, with both medium and long-term strategies, Malaysia

has put forward its development plans to move forward in its attempt to become a
developed nation by the year 2020. The main issue here, however, whether Malaysia is still
far from achieving the most significant challenge in Vision 2020, such as the development of
a united Bangsa Malaysia, which is often seen in the light of ethnicity and the relationship
between ethnic groups as well as their ethnic self-identification, rather than identification
with the Malaysian nation. While it is widely recognized that the country has made
considerable strides in various aspects of nation-building, such as developing its economy,
the education system, and generally improving the quality of life of its citizens since the
British Independence in 1957, the most complicated aspect, perhaps, remains the issue of
effectively managing diversity, such as molding the various ethnic groups and sustaining
their cohesiveness over the long term through nation-building.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a business model of self-regulation that allows a
business to be socially accountable to itself, its customers, and the public. Companies
should be mindful of the kind of effect they have on all facets of society, including economic,
social, and environmental aspects, by exercising corporate social responsibility, also called
corporate citizenship. Corporate social responsibility is a broad term that, depending on the
organization and industry, can take several forms. Businesses can support society through
CSR initiatives, philanthropy, and charitable activities while boosting their brands. It is
equally valuable for a company, as critical as CSR is for society. CSR events will help create
a stronger employee-corporate relationship, raise productivity, and help both workers and
employers feel more connected to the world around them. CSR refers to methods in which
businesses or companies perform their business in a manner that is ethical and friendly to
society. CSR may include several activities, such as collaborating with local communities in
collaboration, socially responsive investment, building partnerships with staff, consumers,
and their families, and participating in environmental protection and sustainability activities.
Through economic growth and development in countries where the business has a direct
impact and where stakeholders can influence operations, Sime Darby creates shared value
for society. To ensure the survival of their companies, they understand that they are part of
the greater community and collective development is the key in their journey. Their work with
communities includes identifying local needs and seeking ideas that can solve their
businesses' related social or economic problems. Their social goal is to facilitate the growth
of society by providing local opportunities for jobs, skills, and education, as well as by
engaging in community initiatives to improve living conditions. In 1982, Yayasan Sime Darby
(YSD) was set up to provide the Sime Darby companies with philanthropic funding. Over the
years, the Foundation has extended its wings to finance impactful local and international
conservation, outreach, and growth programs, from providing scholarships to exceptional
and worthy individuals. Today, it envisions to lead and make a sustainable impact and
difference in the lives of others through the pillars of education, environment, community &
health, youth & sports, and arts & culture.
Yayasan Sime Darby is now offering scholarships and grants to deserving Malaysians
with outstanding academic outcomes and leadership qualities in local and foreign institutions
for vocational studies, certificates, diplomas, and undergraduate studies. More than 4,440
students have benefited from our scholarships over the last 30 years. In 2019, YSD gave
461 scholarships and grants to Malaysians and other nationals from areas in which Sime
Darby Berhad, Sime Darby Plantation Berhad, and Sime Darby Property Berhad operate in
different disciplines. The vision of Yayasan Sime Darby is to “Lead and have a lasting
impact and difference in the lives of others”. Furthermore, YSD supports programs that
reduce disparities between urban and rural communities in access to quality education.
Particularly for those who are improving the access of marginalized people to basic
education. By awarding 560 scholarships and bursaries worth RM25 million for the year
2020/2021, Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD) declared its commitment to creating equal
education opportunities in Malaysia. (Metro News, 2020).
Projects that will add value to each of its developments have been implemented by the
Sime Darby property division. In the townships of every Sime Darby property, facilities such
as mini-parks and jogging paths can be found at least one to encourage communities to
practice a healthy lifestyle. By establishing a recycling center in the townships, Sime Darby
did not forget its mission to develop a sustainable future and inculcate the community's
recycling mindset. The Alam Flora Sdn Bhd will take over continuous maintenance once the
center is finished. Sime Darby recently built a state-of-the-art police station for one of its
Damansara developments and installed 22 closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) to improve
safety awareness. As there have been many incidents of crime in Subang Jaya, Selangor,
Sime Darby has provided patrol units for its townships in Subang. Sime Darby takes into
account the position of low and medium lower-income earners, offering a lower cost of a
variety of residence and apartment choices. For the convenience of the communities,
facilities such as school libraries will be created nearby.
To sum up, CSR is a thing that every company should be aware of to make their
company turn into being a trusted and favoured company. Sime Darby would be the perfect
example for other local companies that do take CSR into accounts for their efforts. Some of
their works include providing the society with needs, job opportunities, giving promising
students scholarships, promoting the society to have a healthy life, and contributing to the
effort of preserving the natural environment. That has positively impacted the process of
nation-building in Malaysia. Through that, both, the society and the company gained
benefits. The company gained trust and popularity while society gained improvements to
their overall well-being. Therefore, CSR is important in terms of making nation-building a
success.
