August / September 2016
2½ hours
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Answer all questions in Section A and any five from Section B
Any additional question(s) will not be marked
All necessary calculations must be shown clearly with the rest of the answer.
Therefore, no paper should be given for rough work
Silent, non – programmable scientific calculators and Mathematical tables with a list
of formulae may be used.
4. Find the equation of a straight line which passes through the mid-point of the line
segment AB with coordinates A (-2, 3) and B(4,7) and it is parallel to the line
4 y−x=3 . (4marks)

y=2x2 + 3x – 3 6 2 24
y = 7x – 3 -24 4 18
(b) Use the completed table in (a) above to draw on the same axes the graphs
y = 2x2 + 3x – 3 and y = 7x – 3 for -3 < x < 3. Use scales of 2cm to represent
1 unit on the x – axis and 2 cm to represent 5 units on the y-axis.
(c) Use your graphs in (b) to solve the equation 2x2 – 4x = 0. (12 marks)

T 2=¿ ( 0.5 0 ¿ ) ¿ ¿¿
another matrix ¿ to give the final image P11Q11R11.
(b) On the same axes draw triangles PQR, P1Q1R1 and P11Q11R11.
(c) Use your graph in (b) above to describe fully the transformation
represented by T2. (12 marks)
14. The frequency table below shows the weights in kilogram (kg) of 60 people who
attended a certain workshop.
15. A school is to transport its science teachers and students for a residential science
workshop. The coast of maintaining a teacher is sh. 60,000 and sh. 45,000 a
student. The school has a maximum of sh.1,800,000 for the residential workshop.
One and a half times the number of teachers should exceed the number of
students. Given that the school can only transport and maintain up to a total of 35
people;
(a) write down five inequalities representing the above information.
16. (a) Given that 4 tan θ=3 and that θ is an acute angle, find the value of
cosθ
sin θ .

triangle ABC with a radius of 5cm.

Calculate the areal of the shaded region. ( Use π =3 .14 ) (8 marks)
17. (a) The solution of the following simultaneous equations 3ax + 2by = 2 and
bx + 4ay = 0, where a and b are constant is { (x, y) : (2, 3) }.
Find the values of a and b. (5 marks)
