PAPALEXANDROPOULOS
2007 – today: Professor of the History of Religions at the Theological School of the
University of Athens, Greece.
2006: Visiting Researcher at the International Center for Japanese Studies
(Nichibunken), Kyoto.
2000: Post‐doctoral research on Dogen at the Department of Indology and Buddhist
Philosophy, University of Tokyo under Prof. Sueki Fumihiko in collaboration with
Komazawa University (Japan Foundation Scholarship).
1997: Assistant Professor at the Theological School of the University of Athens.
1994: Post‐doctoral research on Kojiki mythology at Kokugakuin University.
1992: PhD (Theological School of the University of Athens) Ὁ Ἰάπωνας φιλόσοφος
ταυτότητος (The Japanese Philosopher Nishida Kitaro – on the definition of his Buddhist
Identity).
1979‐1981: Post‐graduate studies on Nishida Kitaro philosophy and Buddhism under
Prof. Sueki Takehiro at Tokyo University (Monbusho scholarship).
1974: Bachelor of Theology, Theological School of the University of Athens.
Stylianos L. Papalexandropoulos has authored in Greek a number of books on
Japanese Religions, especially Japanese Buddhism. Except for his PhD he has written:
Θεότητες και κόσμος στην κοσμογονία του Κοτζίκι (Deities and the World in Kojiki
Work of Dogen), (Ἱστορία τής τέχνης του Ἰαπωνικου Βουδισμού ‐552‐794 μ.Χ. (A
History of Japanese Buddhist Art 552‐794). He has also written many articles on various
religious and theological subjects.
He has translated Japanese Literature (Ueda Akinari, Shiga Naoya, Abe Kobo).

He has taught for years on Japanese Civilization at the School of Literature of the
University of Athens and elsewhere and lectured extensively on related subjects.
Together with mrs Cybele Vernie he has been the initiator for the establishment of
the School of Asiatic Studies at the Ionian University, Corfou.
