 a  Kaleidoscope

Bored  of  gazing  out  the  window?  Try  SAM  Labs'  DIY  kaleidoscope!
You  will  need:  Scissors,  Pringles®  Can  or  2"  Mailing  Tube,  Paper,  Masking  Tape  or  Painter's  Tape,
Chopsticks,  Colored  Markers,  Glue,  Newspaper,  3  Educational  Innovations  Kaleidoscope  Mirrors
(SM-‐3),  1  SAM  DC  Motor,  1  SAM  Button.

1. Prepare  the  Pringles®  can  by  punching  a  hole  in  the  metal  bottom  of  the  can  to  serve  as  the
eyepiece.  If  you're  using  a  Mailing  Tube,  punch  a  hole  in  one  of  the  plastic  end  caps.

2. Arrange  the  3  mirrors  (on  a  desk)  in  columns  as  shown.    The  mirrors  in  the  column  should
not  be  touching.    Leave  a  small  space  between  each  column  (about  the  width  of  a  mirror.)

NOTE: Test the length of the mirror inside the Pringles® can. It should not touch the cap
of the Pringles can. It may be necessary for an adult to cut 1/8" to 1/4" off the mirrors
using sharp scissors or a utility knife in order for it to fit inside the can with the cap on.

3. Create  a  hinge  with  masking  or  painters  tape.

4. Cover  the  gaps  of  the  mirror  array  with  masking  tape.  Trim  tape  at  ends.

5. Remove  the  protective  clear  coating  from  the  surface  of  the  mirrors.    Gently  fold  the  slides
of  the  mirrors  into  a  triangular  prism  so  the  mirrors  are  pointing  inward.

6. Tape  the  prism  in  shape  and  cover  the  gaps  where  the  mirrors  come  together.

7. Twist  a  page  of  a  newspaper  into  two  12"  strips.    Wrap  the  twisted  strips  of  newspaper
around  the  prism  to  provide  stability  and  making  certain  that  the  prism  is  lined  up  over  the
hole,  insert  the  mirrors  and  newspaper  into  the  Pringles®  can.    Continue  to  add  more
newspaper  to  stabilize  the  prism.

8. On  a  fresh  sheet  of  paper,  cut  some  4"  diameter  circles.

9. Draw  some  cool  designs  on  them  with  the  colored  markers.  You  can  design  your
kaleidoscope,  too.  Color  the  outside  of  the  mailing  tube  or  wrap  paper  around  the  Pringles®
Can  and  decorate  it  with  the  colored  markers.

10. Cut  (or  have  an  adult  cut)  the  chopsticks  in  half.  Glue  one  end  to  the  center  of  each  paper
circle  design,  and  poke  a  hole  in  the  other  end  so  it  will  fit  onto  the  SAM  DC  Motor  as  shown:

11. Glue  or  tape  the  DC  Motor  to  the  top  of  the  tube  so  the  paper  circle  almost  touches  the
open  end,  as  shown:

12. Open  up  the  SAM  Space  App.  Turn  on  your  blocks,  pair  them,  and  drag  them  onto  the
interface.  Connect  the  Button  to  the  Toggle  and  to  the  DC  Motor  base.

13. Now  you  can  control  the  spinning  circle  on  the  end  of  your  kaleidoscope  with  the  SAM
Button.
