(WHO) mental health
is more than just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities.
Mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own
abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able
to make a contribution to his or her community.
Multiple social, psychological, and biological factors determine the level of mental
health of a person at any point of time. For example, violence and persistent socio-
economic pressures are recognized risks to mental health.
Poor mental health is also associated with rapid social change
The coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of our time
and the greatest challenge we have faced since World War Two. Since its
emergence in Asia late last year, the virus has spread to every continent except
Antarctica.
We have now reached the tragic milestone of one million deaths, and the human
family is suffering under an almost intolerable burden of loss.
Every day, people are losing jobs and income, with no way of knowing when
normality will return. Small island nations, heavily dependent on tourism, have
empty hotels and deserted beaches. The International Labour
Organization estimates that 400 million jobs could be lost.
The World Bank projects a US$110 billion decline in remittances this year, which
could mean 800 million people will not be able to meet their basic needs.
Mental health promotion involves actions that improve psychological well-being. This
may involve creating an environment that supports mental health.
An environment that respects and protects basic civil, political, socio-economic and
cultural rights is fundamental to mental health.
WHO has previously highlighted the chronic underfunding of mental health: prior to
the pandemic, countries were spending less than 2 per cent of their national health
budgets on mental health, and struggling to meet their populations’ needs.
