I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud

BY WILLIAM WORDSWORTH

The waves beside them danced; but they

I wandered lonely as a cloud
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
A poet could not but be gay,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
In such a jocund company:
A host, of golden daffodils;
I gazed—and gazed—but little thought
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
What wealth the show to me had brought:
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

For oft, when on my couch I lie

Continuous as the stars that shine
In vacant or in pensive mood,
And twinkle on the milky way,
They flash upon that inward eye
They stretched in never-ending line
Which is the bliss of solitude;
Along the margin of a bay:
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
And dances with the daffodils.
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
The Magic of Solitude

A formalistic analysis of the poem:

I Wandered as a Lonely Cloud

The poems is about the wandering of the persona alone and his encounter with the wonderful
sight of golden daffodils beside a lake. The poet thoroughly described the beauty of the nature
he saw. The daffodils were compared to the movement of the waves. The natural scenery is
said to be as far as the eyes stretch and continuous as the stars above. These experience of
the persona is one that he will never forget.

The extensive use of figurative language contributed to the appreciation of readers of the theme
of natural beaty. The connection between solitude, “ wandering as a lonely cloud”, has affected
the meaning of the poem by highlighting the contrast between being alone against the elegance
of nature. If we observe and read carefully, the rhythm of the poem gives continuity as it follows
a rhyme scheme of ABABCC which can be associated with the flow of meaning. The end stanza
close the poem and completes the delivery of the poems meaning. The poem is trying to say
that the journey we take alone is memorable, one that seems to never cease.

The structure of the poem which follows a sequence, wandering alone- discovery of nature –
contemplating the experience of nature, leads to straightforward understanding of the poem.
The unity of elements on the poem entails a feat worthy of a great author.
