Chapter 1: Fractions and Decimals

Most Essential Learning Competencies, Week 6: The learner:

1. solves multi-step problems involving multiplication and addition or subtraction of decimals, mixed
decimals and whole numbers including money using appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools.

Module 6: Lesson 6
Mixed Operations with Decimals
Lesson Targets:
1. solving decimals using the correct order of operations; and
2. following the correct order of operation with decimals.

Unboxing Challenge
Mother bought 1.2 kg of vegetable at ₱45.50 per kilogram and 2.5 kg of chicken at ₱103.25 per
kilogram. How much did she pay altogether?
Solution: We need to multiply first the total amount for each item bought.
₱45.50 × 1.2 + ₱103.25 × 2.5 = ₱54.6 + ₱258.125 = ₱𝟑𝟏𝟐. 𝟕𝟐𝟓
Therefore, mother paid ₱312.725 in all, rounded off to ₱312.73.
Discussion
Here is another example: What is the value of (0.62 − 0.42) ÷ 0.1 + 4.5?
Solution: (0.62 − 0.42) ÷ 0.1 + 4.5 Do the operations inside the parentheses first.
= 0.2 ÷ 0.1 + 4.5 Do division first.
= 2 + 4.5 Add.
= 𝟔. 𝟓 Therefore, the value is 6.5.

100 × (0.3 + 0.02) ÷ 0.5 =?

= 100 × (0.3 + 0.02) ÷ 0.5 Do the operations inside the parentheses first.
= 100 × 0.32 ÷ 0.5 Do the multiplication first.
= 32 ÷ 0.5 Then divide.
= 𝟔𝟒 Therefore, 100 × (0.3 + 0.02) ÷ 0.5 is equal to 64.

(4.21 − 0.39) + 4.3 × 9.6 =?

= (4.21 − 0.39) + 4.3 × 9.6 Do the operations inside the parentheses first.
= 3.82 + 4.3 × 9.6 Do the multiplication first.
= 3.82 + 41.28 Then add.
= 𝟒𝟓. 𝟏 Therefore, (4.21 − 0.39) + 4.3 × 9.6 is equal to 45.1.

Remember: To solve decimal problems involving several operations, below are the steps:
✓ First, perform the operations inside the grouping symbols.
✓ Second, divide or multiply.
✓ Lastly, add or subtract.

Guided Practice
A. Write the correct answer on the lines.
1. 2.4 + 4.8 ÷ 1.2 2. (4.2 − 1.9) × 1.3
= 2.4 + ________________ = ________________× 1.3
= ________________ = ________________

3. 17.5 − 5.6 ÷ 2 + 0.9 4. 1.8 × (2.11 − 0.71) ÷ 1.2

= 17.5 − ________________ +0.9 = 1.8 ×________________÷ 1.2
= ________________+0.9 = ________________÷ 1.2
= ________________ = ________________

5. (3.2 + 0.4) ÷ 6 × 0.5 6. 1.55 ÷ 1.24 × (6.3 − 4.5)

= ________÷________×________ = ________÷________×________
= ________×________ = ________×________
= ________ = ________
