I. Title: Measure (Metric unit of length conversion)

II. Learning Competency:

1. Converts measurements from one unit to another in both Metric and English
systems.(M7ME-Iib-1-Qtr 2-Week 2).
2. Solves problems involving conversion of units of measurement.(M7ME-Iib-2-Qtr 2
-Week2).

III. Instructions:
This activity sheet focusses on converting measurements from one unit to another in
both Metric and English systems and solves problems involving conversion of units of
measurements. Below are the activities with regard to this topic. Read the directions of every
activity and answer what is asked.
.
IV. Activities:

Lesson Guide 1.
Nowadays the use of the metric system of measurement is recommended because
computations are easier in this system since it uses the power of 10. There are prefixes that
describe each power of 10. The table below shows some of the prefixes used in the metric
system of measurement.

Prefixes Symbol Value Power of 10

Milli m 0.001 or 1/1000 10-3

Centi c 0.01 or 1/100 10-2
Deci d 0.1 or 1/10 10-1
Deka da 10 101
Hecto h 100 102
Kilo k 1000 103
The millimeter (mm), centimeter (cm) and decimeter (dm) are metric units used to
measure short lengths.
The meter (m) and kilometer (km) are metric units used to measure long length and
distances.
Example 1.
Convert 3 m to cm.
100 cm
Solution: 3mx =300 cm
1m

Example 2.
Convert 34 km to m.
1000 m
Solution: 34 km x =34 000 m
1 km

Example 3.
Convert 850 mm to m.

1
1m
Solution: 850 mm x =0.85 m
1000 mm

Example 4.
Convert 6800 cm to m
1m
Solution: 6800 cm x =68 m
100 cm

Activity 1.

7. 450 dm = ____________________cm
8. 34 hm = _____________________cm
9. 86 dm = _____________________mm
10. 7 600 dam = _________________ m

Lesson Guide 2.
1 foot = 12 inches
1 yard = 3 feet
For long distances, the mile is used:
1 mile = 1,760 yards = 5,280 feet

1 inch = 2.54 cm
3.3 feet ≈ 1 meter

Example 1.
Convert 36 inches into feet:
Solution:
1 foot
36 inches x =3 feet
12inches
Example 2:
Convert 2 miles into inches:
Solution:
5280 feet 12 inches 2 x 5280 x 12
2 miles x x = inches=126 , 720inches
1 mile 1 foot 1 x1
Example 3.
Convert 20 inches into cm:

Activity 2.

Direction: Convert the following lengths into the desired unit:

1. 30 inches = ____________________feet.
2. 13,000 miles = __________________feet.
3. 130 inches = ___________________cm.
4. 2 miles = ______________________inches.
5. 20 feet = ______________________meter.

Lesson Guide 3.

2
Example 1.

if she has already covered 64,240 yards?
Solution:
5280 feet
Step 1: 42 miles x =221,760 feet
1 mile
3 feet

Capacity and volume are synonymous terms although they have different meanings.
Volume is defined as the amount of space a region takes up while capacity is defined as
how much a certain container will hold. It follows that anything that can be poured is
measured in capacity units.
An average person must drink 8 to 10 glasses of water a day.
A cubic centimetre (cm3) or one millimetre (ml) of water weighs one gram.
A thousand cubic centimeters or one liter of water weighs one kilogram at 4 ℃ .

Activity 1.

1. Fill up the conversion table below and answer the questions that follow.

Metric unit 1 liter 1 dekaliter 1 hectoliter 1 kiloliter

Milliliter 1 000 ml
Centiliter 100 cl
Deciliter 10 dl
Liter 1l

2. Construct another conversion table by filling up the table below and answer the questions
that follow.

Metric unit 1 milliliter 1 centiliter 1 deciliter 1 liter

5. 5 600 l = ________________ cl 10. 35 000 ml = __________________ dl

Lesson Guide 3.
Mass and weight are very much related, but the two are not the same. The mass of
an object is the amount of matter it contains. The weight, on the other hand, is the pull of
gravity on the object. The mass of an object does not change but the weight of an object
changes. The weight of an astronaut on earth differs from his/her weight on the moon.
The gram is the unit of mass in the metric system. It is used to weigh light objects.
The weight of an ordinary paper clip is about one gram.
A kilogram is the weight of 1 liter of water in its densest state.
The standard metric unit of mass is a cylinder made of a hard metal called platinum
iridium. It weighs one kilogram and is kept in France.

The following shows the conversion of the different weight measure:

Table of weight measurement

Unit of weight Equivalent weight

10 milligrams mg 1 centigram

7
10 centigrams cg 1 decigram
10 decigrams dg 1 gram
10 grams g 1 dekagram
10 dekagrams dag 1 hectogram
10 hectograms hg 1 kilogram (kg)

Activity 3.

Lesson Guide 1.
Angles
Angles Derived from the Latin word angulus, which means corner, an angle is
defined as a figure formed when two rays share a common endpoint called the vertex.
Angles are measured either in degree or radian measures. A protractor is used to determine
the measure of an angle in degrees. In using the protractor, make sure that the cross bar in
the middle of the protractor is aligned with the vertex and one of the legs of the angle is
aligned with one side of the line passing through the cross bar. The measurement of the
angle is determined by its other leg.

Activity 1.

Lesson Guide 3.
The degree Celsius is used to measure temperature. It is named after the Swedish
astronomer, Anders Celsius, who derived the celsius scale in 1742.
A metric thermometer used to measure temperature is divided in intervals between
the freezing and boiling points.
Degree Celsius can be transformed into degree Fahrenheit (named after a German
instrument maker, Gabriel Fahrenheit), thus the English equivalent of Celsius.
The base SI unit for temperature is the Kelvin (K). Unlike the Celsius and Fahrenheit
which are considered degrees, the Kelvin is considered as an absolute unit of measure and
therefore can be worked on algebraically.
