■ Many new Arabic commentaries on the Quran and works on Quranic recitation
appeared in Aurangz;eb’s time.
■ More so Arabic prayer books ,as well as an index to the Quran ; Nujum al-
furqan(1691) was composed
■ Finally towards the end of Aurangzeb’s era Urdu became the classic literary language
of Indian Muslims.
■ At the court of Aurangzeb, there were so many great poets and writers who
contributed significantly for growth of the Persian language and literature, including
his daughter Zaibun- Nisa who was an ablest Persian poet in his Court. She
composed poems under the pen name of Mukhfi
Fatwa-i-Alamgiri’
Originally drafted by Aurangzeb alongside famous Islamic scholars from all around the
world.
Heralded as "the greatest digest of Muslim law made in India", the compilation has been
widely regarded to be one of the most well organised works in the field of Islamic
jurisprudence (Fiqh)
The collection comprises verses from the Quran, supplemented by Hadiths narratives,
including those of Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawood and Jami` at-
Tirmidhi.
The Mughal period produced a vast literature. This was possible because the Mughal
emperors were great patrons of literature.
Apart from Persian and Hindi literature, Bengali and Punjabi literature also made strides.
The most important work during the period was ‘Fatwa-i-Alamgiri’—a digest of Muslim law.
Other works were ‘Muntakhab-ul ‘-a famous history by Khafi Khan and ‘Nuskho-i- Dilkusha’
by Bhimsen.
Also noteworthy is the great collection of legal precedents, Fatawa-yi alamgiri ,which was
compiled for Aurangzeb and which provides an important insight into Muslim law at the end
of 17th century.Many new Arabic commentaries on the Quran and works on Quranic

Finally towards the end of Aurangzeb’s era Urdu became the quintessential literary language of
Indian Muslims.
