C FM (Concorde Fuel Management) is module added to CPS-X and only

acessible from FS9/9.1, FSX and P3D.

This module is the software version of an Air-France used procedure to

manage fuel during flight.
The real procedure needs a preprinted paper sheet with a grid which represent the trip
distance remaining to destination on horizontal axis and the fuel on board on the
vertical axis. It also needs a plastic rule looking like a parallelogram with curved sides.
It was both used to plot the ideal consumption curve, the point of non-return (PNR)
subsonic with 4 engines, and 3 engines and the subsonic continue to destination point
with 4 engines and 3 engines.
It was a French specific procedure as ADEU was an English one.
So I’ve found it should be interesting to add it in CPS-X.

To follow the procedure, you will have no need grid sheet and plastic rule.
CPS-X and CFM will do that for you.

In the next pages you will able to follow the fuel burn all along the flight to be sure to
get the final reserve at destination.

CFM will use the CPS-X exported data to reach this goal….

CFM must be only used in supersonic flight.

Installation

The installation is made during the CPS-X install. You can’t see it because it is
performed without user handling.


Its principle is quite simple.
A new menu is added into FS9/9.1, FSX or P3D through which you will be able
to launch CFM and another module which is the Vol.3. Manual object.

The only way to check if CFM is installed, is to launch FS (all versions) and have a
look to the menu bar.
FS9/9.1 should have a new menu CPS-X.
FSX should have a new submenu of Addons named CPS-X.
P3D should have a new submenu of Addons named CPS-X

CPS-X menu has 2 sub menu:

CFM. Which is described in this manual.
CDC. Which is described in Vol.3. manual

Let us now see how to use CFM.

 Manual

You can see below the both FS menus.

The submenu “Fuel Management” or “Fuel Management sheet” launch CFM.

The Sheet

The application can be closed, but the entered information will be

lost. Instead, use the minimise option to hide it.

Have a look at the details:

Beneath the title bar you find the flight waypoints list.
All the waypoints displayed at the bottom of the sheet are listed inside.

Right the waypoint list, you see “FOB” in which you’ll have to type the fuel on
board when passing the right waypoint.

Right to “FOB” is the “ETA” (Estimated Time of Arrival) to a determined

waypoint.
By default, the actual time is displayed, but it can be changed at you discretion.

4
M A N U A L

Then you find 3 button. “OK” plot the complete graph from the data entered by
user. “Clear” delete all plotted curves. “Print Chart” allows to print the sheet to
any printer installed.

The next information on this part of the screen is the departure airport ICAO
code and the destination airport ICAO code.

In our case, EHAM to KJFK.

There is no more information or command on the top of screen.

Just below you will find:

The top of the graph includes 5 fields representing the 5 average wind areas from
CPS-X.
1st corresponds to departure subsonic step if any, 2nd, 3rd and 4th are supersonic
areas and 5th is arrival subsonic step if any.
Values inside are those either downloaded on NOAA by real weather or entered
manual if custom weather has been selected.

The external text right to the grid is flight remainder.

Flight number.
Aircraft registration.
Date of flight.

Graph

Horizontal axis is remaining distance to destination (Left to right) in nautical

miles.
Just beneath the horizontal axis can be found the waypoint labels with their
respective position on the axis.

Vertical axis is remaining fuel on board in metric tons.

6
M A N U A L

CFM automatically set the value according with the flight.

So the graph will have always the same dimensions but the scale will change for
both distance and amount of fuel.

Legend

The frame on the right of the graph is the legend. This one is interactive with the
graph. Each item on legend represents a curve or a label. So user can showing
what he wants selecting the concerned items.

The last frame on right side of graph is information box.

In this frame will be displayed the position of important points we will discuss in
depth further in the manual.
Blue areas give:
Upper: 4 engines point of non-return to departure and subsonic flight to
destination (In case of depressurization or failure).
Lower: 3 engines point of non-return to departure and subsonic flight to
destination (In case of 1 engine out and or depressurization).

The main purpose of CFM being the fuel consumption forecast, an ideal curve
will plotted first.
This curve will begin at a waypoint where Concorde reached the cruise speed of
M2.0-M2.02.

Fuel curve

When overflying this point, the Flight Engineer note the FOB and time and then
enter these values in CFM which plot the ideal consumption curve immediately.

8
M A N U A L

A red dot and the FOB value becomes the start of the curve:
Here 67 t à 09:26 at point SM15W. The next waypoint is displayed in the list.
Nothing insurmountable for now!!
The ETA for next points are also displayed.
The curve finishes at destination and with the planned landing fuel.
Unlike it seems, this is a curve and not a straight line. This because the fuel burn
decreases as the aircraft becomes lighter during the flight.

Overflying each next waypoints, Flight Engineer will note the FOB and enter it in
CFM.
Comparing the black and the red curve, you easily see the fuel consumption
progression.
You can skip one or more waypoint mainly when they are close to avoid
to overload the graph and keep it more readable
Now have a look to the 4 other curves. In fact there are only 2 important
information:

Point of non-return.

Let us see what means all those expressions:

Point of Non-Return is the point at which an aircraft cannot return to its
departure airport at subsonic speed because it will not have enough fuel.
From this point, the aircraft will be only able to reach a nearest airport or the
destination one.

9
M A N U A L

As if the 4 engines work or that only three engines are in service, the PNR will not
be located at the same place.

Left Green line, crossing black curve, represents the PNR with 4 engines.
The blue arrow down in the graph figure the location of this point.

10
M A N U A L

The Lower frame on right of graph gives us more precision.

EHAM 4E (Amsterdam with 4 engines) PNR is 10:08 and 68 nm before SM40W

waypoint.

Display now the PNR with 3 engines on graph.

11
M A N U A L

Orange curve crossing the black one point represents this PNR.
Orange arrow shows the approximate location of PNE 3E
As for PNR 4E, the frame provides more information.

EHAM 3E (Amsterdam with 3 engines) PNR will occurs at 09:58 and 252 nm
before SM40W.

12
M A N U A L

Subsonic Flight to Destination Point

Subsonic Flight to Destination Point is the point at which the aircraft will be
able to reach the destination airport.
As if the 4 engines work or that only three engines are in service, the SFDP will
not be located at the same place.

Same graphical representations are used for SFDP. The crossing point of orange
curve with black one is our SFDP 3 engines.

As usual frame gives us info.

13
M A N U A L

KJFK 3E (Kennedy AD). SFDP at 11:07 and 153 nm before SM65W waypoint.

As you may have seen there is no right green line. Why?

The answer is quite simple:
With 4 engines you will be able to join KJFK in subsonic flight from now.

Keep in mind this not always the case and most of the time

The last information given here is from 09:58 to 11:07 and between 252 nm to
SM40W to 153 nm to SM65W the aircraft will must divert to another airport if 1
engine failure.

CPS-X doesn’t manage the choice of this airport.

A next version should make the deal.

At any time you can print the graph to put it into the flight report.

Conclusions

As you can see, this manual is very lighter than the CPS-X one.
CFM handling is very easy once the basics have been understood.
Using CFM during flight is a good habit, even if this bring a little more workload.

Managing the fuel and knowing when back in case of trouble is very interesting for
a Captain.

Saving the fuel management sheets in pdf format can also have a great interest for
the dispatcher of your VA and it will very great to send me them.
This should allow to build a fuel sheet database and improve the knowledge of

Concorde X fuel efficiency.

I think in a next version I will implement a function that will send the sheet to a
database just clicking a button.

In the mean time I hope you will enjoy the CPS-X and modules.
