Lesson Plan: Pointillism

Date: April 9, 2021

Topic: Art

Lesson Objective: To appreciate and produce works of art in the style of pointillism.

Intro:
 First, I will briefly introduce the topic of the day’s art lesson by discussing the two artists who
developed this style: Paul Signac and Georges Seurat.
 I will show some examples of their work, such as “The Chateau des Papes” and “A Sunday
Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte.”

Development:
 I will discuss the style of pointillism.
o From a distance, you see what you typically would see from any other painting:
Beautiful sceneries, and amazing colors. Upon closer inspection, however, you notice
that the painting is composed entirely of individual dots.
 The artists used this style to create landscape images of various scenery.
o Show examples.
 The artists understood color very well, and they used different colored dots beside each
other to complement each other (make them stand out) or even layered over other dots to
create interesting combinations.
 Following this description, I will show a slide with various examples that other students have
created before.
 Once I have shown all of this, I will demonstrate how we will be experimenting with this
style.
 Under the Doc-Cam, I will project a small sheet of white painting paper, and I will begin
sketching out a simple design by lightly drawing in pencil.
 I will then use a Q-tip to paint my work by sporadically dotting the paper with various colors.
This will show the class how dots of different colors, when overlapping or next to each other,
makes each one stand out.
 Following this explanation, I will enlist the aid of several students to help me distribute the
following materials.
o Brown paper, to cover their worksurface.
o Several Q-tips per student.
o Small white painting paper.
o A paper plate per student.
 Students can then begin sketching out their pictures with pencil.
 A table at the back will be set up with various colored acrylic paints.
o I will call students up in groups to get their required paint, once they are done with
