Introduction To Color Codes 02 - Drawing Color Codes
Introduction To Color Codes 02 - Drawing Color Codes
Quick Summary:
Students will learn the basic functionality of Ozobot. Students will learn how
to draw Color Codes Ozobot can read.
Duration: 45 min
Running This Lesson Remotely: Students will have all instruction delivered via video(s), so you will use this Lesson
Plan & Activity Guide for your reference only. Before assigning, deliver Student Materials, such as Activity Sheets,
either in print or digitally (to be printed at home).
1 Student will identify and label Color Codes by utilizing the Color Code Reference Sheet
3 Student will identify if a Ozobot would successfully read Color Codes and explain, through writing, why it would or
would not work.

Teacher Tips
For supporting any color-blind and/or visually impaired students, allow them to utilize Color Code Chart and inform the
student(s) that the colors are labeled under each color segment. Be sure to label any Color Codes in these lesson
materials so that they correspond to the Color Code chart. Use masking tape to label Color Code markers your student
will use. Find the Color Code Chart here: https://files.ozobot.com/stem-education/Ozobot-Color-Codes-Chart.pdf
Direct Instruction
1 Use the intructional video to guide your students through the Introduction to Color Codes activity. Alternatively,
continue with the direct instructions below.
Explain to students that they will build on what they've learned about Ozobot's line and color sensors to
communicate commands to their Ozobot with Color Codes!
If needed, review that Ozobot's line-following sensors are under the bot towards the front, and the color sensor is
located between the wheels. Explain to students that under Ozobot, between the wheels, there is an optical
sensor that detects colors.
2 Display the Color Code Reference Sheet. Explain that Color Codes are a language Ozobot understands made up
of sequences of colors. Ozobot knows that when it reads a certain color sequence, you want it to do something.
Using Color Codes, you can tell your Ozobot to: change speed, change direction, perform cool moves, and more.
3 Have students take out their Page 1 activity sheet. Tell students they can place their bot anywhere on the black
line. Watch the bot as it travels over each Color Code. Ask students to identify and label what they think each
Color Code means based on their bot's response.
4 Now, students will practice drawing Color Codes! Show them how to copy the two Color Codes on Page 2. Share
some helpful hints:
• Ozobot can only read Color Codes drawn between black lines (unless it is a special "line end" code)
• Ensure that your color boxes within the Color Code are about 1/4" squares
• Don't overlap colors
• Don't leave white space between colors
• Don't make the colors too dark
•Don't draw lines on curves or too close to intersections.
5 Introduce the concept of symmetric and asymmetric Color Codes. Explain that some of Ozobot’s Color Codes are
the same either way Ozobot reads them. These are called "Symmetric" Codes. They are the same forward and
backward.
However, some of Ozobot’s Color Codes are asymmetric— the colors are in a different order depending on the
direction Ozobot travels over the code. This means Ozobot will have a different response, depending on which
way Ozobot reads the color sequence! Guide students to complete page 3, and discuss which codes are
symmetric and which are asymmetric.
6 Guide students through completing page 4. Assist them in completing their Color Codes. If they have trouble,
remind them to:
•Use black marker before and after the Color Code (unless it is a special "line end" code)
• Ensure that your colors are all the same length
• Not overlap colors
• Not leave white space between colors
• Not make the colors too dark
• Not draw lines on curves or too close to intersections.
7 Guide students through completing page 5. If needed, show students how to draw the Color Codes and shapes
on another paper to test if they will work.
8 Wrap up the lesson, and explain to students that they will be learning about the Ozobot's directionality in the next
lesson.

2 Look underneath the bot between the wheels. Can you locate Ozobot's color sensor?
3 Look at the Color Code Reference Sheet. What colors are used to make Color Codes?
4 Find Page 1. Place your bot on the black line, and watch as Ozobot moves over the Color
Codes. Label each Color Code. Use the Color Code Reference Sheet if you need help!
5 Find Page 2. Use your markers to copy the two Color Codes on the sheet. Place Ozobot on the
line to see if it changes behavior when it goes over your Color Codes.
6 Find Page 3. Use the key to draw the three Color Codes. Watch closely as Ozobot moves
across the line, u-turns at the end, and travels the opposite way. What do you notice about
Ozobot's behavior?
7 Find Page 4. Use your markers to draw the four Color Codes listed on the worksheet.
8 Find Page 5. Look at each problem. Determine if Ozobot would be able to read the Color Code.
If not, write a sentence why.
