FINAL EXAMINATION

Math156 - DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

First Quarter, SY 2018-2019

WARNING: Academic dishonesty or any form of cheating is a major offense.

SHOW DETAILED SOLUTION FOR EACH PROBLEM

Course Outcome 1 (Total of 50 points)

1. Find the solution to the given differential equation (3𝑦 2 + 2𝑥𝑦)𝑑𝑥 −

(2𝑥𝑦 + 𝑥 2 )𝑑𝑦 = 0. (15 points)
2. At 11:00 pm, a thermometer reading 85°F is taken outside where the air
temperature is −20°F. At 11:02 pm, the reading is 35°F. At 11:05 pm, the thermometer
is taken back indoors where the air is at 85°F. What is the thermometer reading at 11:10
pm? (15 points)
3. Consider a tank used in certain hydrodynamic experiments. After one
experiment the tank contains 400 liters of a dye solution with a concentration of 2
gram/liter. To prepare for the next experiment, the tank is to be rinsed with fresh
water flowing at a rate of 4 liters/min, the well-stirred solution flowing out at the
same rate. Find the time that will elapse before the concentration of dye in the
tank reaches 2% of its original value. (20 points)

Course Outcome 2 (Total of 50 points)

4. Verify that the equation is exact and find the solution using any method:
(3𝑥 2 − 2𝑥𝑦 + 2)𝑑𝑥 + (6𝑦 2 − 𝑥 2 + 3)𝑑𝑦 = 0 (10 points)
5. Find the general solution to 𝑦 (4) − 5𝑦 ′′ + 4𝑦 = 0. (10 points)
6. Verify whether the following expressions are linearly dependent functions:
5𝑡
{𝑒 , sin 5𝑡, cos 5𝑡} (10 points)
7. Using the method of reduction of order, find a second solution to
𝑡 𝑦 + 3𝑡𝑦 ′ + 𝑦 = 0, given that 𝑦1 (𝑡) = 𝑡 −1 is a solution. (20 points)
2 ′′

Course Outcome 3 (Total of 50 points)

8. Find the general solution to 𝑦 ′′′ − 4𝑦 ′ = 𝑡 + 3𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 + 𝑒 2𝑡 (using method of

undetermined coefficients) (15 points)
9. A series circuit has a capacitor of 10−5 F, a resistor of 3 × 102 Ω, and an
inductor of 0.2 H. The initial charge on the capacitor is 10−6 C and there is no
initial current. Find the charge Q on the capacitor at any time 𝑡. (15 points)
10. A mass weighing 3 lb stretches a spring 3 in. If the mass is pushed
upward, contracting the spring a distance of 1 in, and then set in motion with a
downward velocity of 2 ft/s, and if there is no damping, find the position 𝑢 of the
mass at any time 𝑡. Determine the frequency, period, amplitude, and phase of
the motion. (20 points)
