LEARNERS’ ACTIVITY SHEETS IN MATH-5

Quarter 3 Week 1

Name: ______________________ Grade & Section: ________

School: ______________________ Date: _________________
Teacher: _____________________ Score: ________________

I. Title: Understanding Percent

II. Learning Competencies:
 Visualizes percent and its relationship to fraction, ratio and decimal numbers
using models. (M5NS-IIIa-137)
 Defines percentage, rate or percent, and base. (M5NS-IIIa-138)
 Identifies the base, percentage, and rate in the problem. (M5NS-IIIb-139)

III. Instructions:
Read and understand carefully the following concept and activities below.
Concept

 Percent came from the Latin word, “per centum” which means “for every
hundred”.
 A percent is a ratio of a number to 100.
 The symbol “%” read as “percent”.
 There are times when the total is not 100 but we can still express the given
part in the percent. We can use the cross product rule that we use in
proportions to do it.
Example 1
Examine illustration 1
Notice that there are 99 shaded parts out of
100 parts
The shaded part of the illustration show 99%

Compare the shaded portion with the

unshaded one. Let us organize this information in a
table.

Illustration 1
Number Comparison to How it is Read How it is written
the total number
Shaded 99 99 out of 100 99 percent 99%
Unshaded 1 1 out of 100 1 percent 1%
Example 2:
80
Emily got a score of in her Math quiz. What percent of the total number of
100
items she get correctly?
The figure below represents Emily’s correct answer.

 One hundred boxes show the total number of items while eighty shaded boxes
out of the 100 boxes show her correct answers.
 The unshaded part shows the items that she did answer correctly.

“80 out of 100” is the same as “ 80 percent”

and “80%”
80
In fraction 80 out of 100 is written as
100
80
in decimal form is written as 0.80
100
80
in ratio is written as 80: 100 or 4:5
100

Illustration 2

 Percent is express in two ways:

Fraction Symbol Read

80 80 out of 100
100 80% 80 percent
n n out of 100
100 n% n percent

 Percentage is a part of a whole. That whole or total is the base, while the
number with percent (%) symbol is the rate.
 Percentage at a constant rate is direct
 Ly proportional with the base. In symbols: P= R x B, where P is the
percentage, R is the rate, and B is the Base. Note that before applying the
formula, rate must be converted to decimal first.
 Examine:
25% of 8 is 2. This statement deal with three elements; the rate, base,
and percentage.
Rate
Base
 The relationship among the three is:
R x B = P or P = R x B
Percentage
 25% is the rate. It is given as percent. It can be expressed as a ratio or
25
fraction
100
 8 is the base. It is a whole number of which you take the percent.
 2 is called the percentage, meaning a part of the whole. It is resulting
fractional part of the base.

 Rate is the number written with the word “percent” or with the symbol “%”.
 Base is the total or whole and it is the number that usually follows the phrase
“percent of ‘’ or “ % of “
 Percentage is the part of the whole.

IV. Activities:

Activity 1

A. Direction: Determine what percent of each figure is shaded.

1. ______________ 2. _________________

3. ______________
B. Direction: Fill in the table below. Write your answer in your answer sheet.
(Item # 4 & 5)

Words Fraction Symbol Decimal

4 out of 100 4. 40% 5.

C. Direction: Shade the part of a 100 – chart that represent the percent below.

1.) 10% 2.) 45% 3.) 85%

4.) 71% 5.) 60%

Activity 2:
A. Direction: Read each item carefully. Choose the letter that corresponds to your
answer. Write your answer on a sheet of paper.
1. In the statement 65% 780 = N, 65% is called rate because ________.
a. it is given as percent
b. it is a whole number of which you take the percentage
c. it is the resulting fractional part of a whole
2. In the 25% of 800 = 200, 200 is the percentage because _________.
a. it is given as percent
b. it is a whole number of which you take the percentage
c. it is the resulting fractional part of the base
3. Rate
a. it gives the total of the whole
b. it always has the “%” sign
c. it gives part of the whole
4. Percentage
a. it names part of the whole
b. it is always written with the percentage sign
c. it represent the total number or the whole
5. Base
a. it is the whole from which you take a portion
b. it is a part or portion of the whole
c. it is termed as percent
B. Direction: Identify the missing elements in the following situation below. Write B if
the missing element is Base, R if it is Rate and P if Percentage. Write your answer
on a sheet of paper.
___1. 8% of 55 is n.
___2. 20% of n is 16.
___3. n% of 50 is 30.
___4. 27 is 47% of n.
___5. n% of 300 is 39.
Activity 3:
Direction: Identify the base, rate, and percentage. Write it under its corresponding
column. Item number 1 is done for you.

Given Base Rate Percentage

1. 30% of n is 1.8 n 30% 1.8
2. 240 is n% of 400
