III. Instructions:
Read and understand carefully the following concept and activities below.
Concept
Percent came from the Latin word, “per centum” which means “for every
hundred”.
A percent is a ratio of a number to 100.
The symbol “%” read as “percent”.
There are times when the total is not 100 but we can still express the given
part in the percent. We can use the cross product rule that we use in
proportions to do it.
Example 1
Examine illustration 1
Notice that there are 99 shaded parts out of
100 parts
The shaded part of the illustration show 99%

Shaded 99 99 out of 100 99 percent 99%
Unshaded 1 1 out of 100 1 percent 1%
Example 2:

Emily got a score of in her Math quiz. What percent of the total number of
100
items she get correctly?
The figure below represents Emily’s correct answer.
One hundred boxes show the total number of items while eighty shaded boxes
out of the 100 boxes show her correct answers.
The unshaded part shows the items that she did answer correctly.
Illustration 2
Percentage is a part of a whole. That whole or total is the base, while the
number with percent (%) symbol is the rate.
Percentage at a constant rate is direct
Ly proportional with the base. In symbols: P= R x B, where P is the
percentage, R is the rate, and B is the Base. Note that before applying the
formula, rate must be converted to decimal first.
Examine:
25% of 8 is 2. This statement deal with three elements; the rate, base,
and percentage.
Rate
Base
The relationship among the three is:
R x B = P or P = R x B
Percentage
25% is the rate. It is given as percent. It can be expressed as a ratio or
25
fraction
100
8 is the base. It is a whole number of which you take the percent.
2 is called the percentage, meaning a part of the whole. It is resulting
fractional part of the base.
Rate is the number written with the word “percent” or with the symbol “%”.
Base is the total or whole and it is the number that usually follows the phrase
