A plan of a physical layout of a Year 4 English Language classroom


to enable participation of pupils in large classes

This classroom arrangement works by grouping desks in fours. This


arrangement encourages active learning as all students are able to
engage themselves in activities conducted during the learning process
especially when they are asked to perform group tasks. Moreover, this
arrangement is great for supporting group projects and fostering better
collaboration. When students sit in groups, they can discuss an issue or
a topic together. For example, teachers can give a question to the
students and let them think individually and share their own opinions and
ideas with other students in the group. This arrangement is also great for
pupils in large classes as it does not use up too much space.

Teacher Desk
This is a place for teachers to plan, answer school e-mail, write
individualized education programs (IEPs), and keep records. A teacher
desk and chair are usually sufficient furnishings. The teacher is also able
to visually scan the entire classroom when sitting in the teacher work
area. As a teaching tool, having a specific and well-defined teacher work
area allows opportunities to teach students the important concept of
honouring and respecting boundaries. Students must learn that some
places or sections of the classroom are off-limits to them. Students
would know that this is the teacher’s separate and private work area and
understand the importance of boundaries and private areas as well. This
directly translates into appropriate work habits that will be required for
the successful employment of our students in the future.

Notice Board
All students need an individual schedule. Sometimes the students'
schedules need to be located at the notice board so that they would
know which students need to take their schedules to do their work or
duty. Moreover, the teacher can also paste some important notices like
classroom rules, memos and important announcements on the notice
board. Besides, if the students have done a wonderful job, the teacher
may paste the students’ work on the board so the other students can see
and try to improve their work.
Classroom Library
The function of a classroom library is to support reading and writing
instruction of the students. Classroom library with books and other media
materials to support student learning in all of the daily curriculum
subjects, including materials related to science, health, mathematics,
history, economics, geography, music, art, drama, dance, languages,
grammar, spelling, literature, computers, and other topics.

Reading Area
Every reading-ready classroom should provide a quiet and comfortable
place for students to read independently or with a partner or small group.
A good reading area should include comfortable seating. This is because
the reading area functions as a gathering spot where students and
teachers can express their lives as readers. Besides, the reading area
also provides a place for teachers to teach and children to learn about
books and book selection.

Computer Station
This area contains computers, tables and chairs. Because this
equipment requires electricity, this area needs to be in close proximity to
electrical outlets. The computers need to be close to a specific wall in
order to be connected for Internet access. The location of electrical
outlets and Internet connections is the single most important
consideration and the starting point for the teacher to arrange his or her
classroom. In addition, the location of computers should be such that
students who are not working with them will not be distracted by those
who are.
Work Station (Student Desk)
This station is a place for students to begin a task, do the task, finish the
task, and put the finished task away without assistance. The use of a
work station is an instructional strategy that teaches appropriate work
habits and independence. For each work station, the teacher will need a
desk or a table, a place to put the work or assignment that is to be
completed, and a place to put the finished work. If the student is
physically active and needs to move frequently, locating the work a short
distance away so that he or she must leave his or her seat to get or put
away work allows opportunities for purposeful movement. Wherever the
work is placed, it is important that the student can access it quickly and
easily.
