fears and how they overcome them.

Assessment Evidence: What exactly do I expect students to be able to do by the end of today’s lesson, and how will I formatively
collect and evaluate evidence of student success?
● Students will be introduced to Jean Basquiat to learn about how we can use art to tell stories.
● Students will watch a video about the poem “Life doesn’t frighten me” by Maya Angelou with Basquiat artwork
and have an open discussion about how his artwork was used to tell the story/poem.
● Students will be asked to put a blue star on the artwork they want to discuss and come up with a possible story
for the artwork.
● Students will be asked to share a previous or past fear and how we can conquer it.
● Students will be asked to check off the steps as they are completing their artwork.
Lesson Development:
Approximate Instructional Sequence
pacing

3 minutes Students will get out materials and objective will be presented.

7 minutes Artist exemplar Jean-Michel Basquiat will be introduced. Two examples of his artworks
will be displayed and with the peardeck students will pick one and come up with a
story based on the painting.

10 minutes A video of the poem/story “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me” by Maya Angelou with
Basquiat's artwork will be shown. They will answer how we can use pictures/artworks
to tell a story. Also what are some of their fears and how they can conquer them.

30 minutes Live demonstrations of artmaking will be shown and questions will be answered.
Students work time. They will make sure they have a fear and a way to conquer it and
make sure it is abstract.

3 minutes Students will verbally participate in an informal discussion to talk about what they
learned and share their artwork.
● Think about what are some things you are afraid of?
○ Is it an animal? A place?
○ What words or images come to mind?
● What can we do to conquer/overcome these fears?

Considerations For Planning

● Vocabulary: What specific content vocabulary will be developed during this learning experience?
-Abstract: is modern art which does not represent images of our everyday world.
-Shape: A closed line.
-Color: a phenomenon of light or visual perception that enables one to differentiate otherwise identical objects.
● Resources: What materials or resources are essential for students to successfully complete the lesson tasks or
activities?
You will need
● White paper
● Oil pastels or crayons
● Watercolors
● Paintbrush
● Water
● Anticipated Misconceptions: Some students may not have the proper materials to complete the lesson, so an
alternative use of materials can be provided. For example, students who did not have oil pastels may use
crayons.
● Anticipated Differentiation and Integration of Universal Design for Learning Principles:
Those who struggle will reinforce the vocabulary by answering open ended questions about the lesson or be
taken to a break out room to catch up.
● Extended Learning Experiences: Students will be asked to hold up their artwork as a virtual gallery.
