Rain on your parade 潑冷水

CAMELOT
MUSIC: Frederick Loewe
LYRICS AND BOOK: Alan Jay Lerner
DIRECTOR: Moss Hart
CHOREOGRAPHER: Hanya Holm
OPENED: 12/3/60, New York

Lerner and Loewe's first Broadway production following their spectacular hit My Fair
Lady, was another musical based on a highly esteemed work of British fiction, T.H.
White's novel, The Once and Future King. Again, too, they were joined by fair lady
Julie Andrews and director Moss Hart for an opulently mounted retelling of the
Arthurian legend, with its highminded knights of the round table and its tragic
romantic triangle involving King Arthur, his queen Guenevere, and his trusted knight,
Sir Lancelot. Helped by a huge advance ticket sale, Camelot easily surmounted a
divided press to become something of a Broadway legend itself-providing imagery
(eventually all too apt) for the administration of President John F. Kennedy who used
to play the cast album in the White House. In 1980, during a tour headed by Richard
Burton (the original King Arthur), Camelot returned to New York to play the New York
State Theatre for 56 performances. After Burton was succeeded on the road by
Richard Harris, the musical came back again, this time to the Winter Garden for an
additional 48 performances. In 1967 Joshua Logan directed Mr. Harris opposite
Vanessa Redgrave in the Warner Bros. film version.

ANNIE GET YOUR GUN

MUSIC AND LYRICS: Irving Berlin
BOOK: Herbert and Dorothy Fields
DIRECTOR: Joshua Logan
CHOREOGRAPHER: Helen Tamiris
OPENED: 5/16/46. New York; a run of 1,147 performances
Irving Berlin ·s musical biography of scrappy gal sharpshooter Annie Oakley earned
standing ovations for Broadway stars of two generations: the original. Ethel Merman.
in the I 940s: and Bernadette Peters in the 1990s. The tune-packed musical traces
Annie's rise from illiterate hillbilly to international marksmanship star as she's
discovered and developed in the traveling "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show." She falls
hard for the show's chauvinistic male star, Frank Butler. And romance blossoms -
right up until Annie begins to outshine Frank. When Berlin revised the show in 1966,
he dropped a secondary love story. and added "An Old Fashioned Wedding" for Frank
and Annie to dream about their future together. Rivalry breaks up the two lovers
again, and the show ends with a shooting contest, "Anything You Can Do," which will
ultimately lead to the marriage of the Annie and Frank. The movie version was
originally to have starred Judy Garland. but after she was fired from the set, Betty
Hutton played the role on screen opposite Howard Keel in the 1950 release. A new
recording of the musical was released in 1990. Bernadette Peters starred in a major
Broadway revival that opened in 1999: Reba McEntire also enjoyed special acclaim as
Annie in that production.

JEKYLL & HYDE

MUSIC: Frank Wildhom
LYRICS AND BOOK: Leslie Bricusse
DIRECTOR: Robin Phillips
CHOREOGRAPHER: Joey Pizzi
OPENED: 4/28/97, New York; still running as of 5/1/00
Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this show
took nearly a decade to mTive on Broadway. However, the first full score by pop
composer Frank Wildhom was already familiar to most lovers of musical theatre from
two widely circulated concept albums. These proved especially popular among
professional skaters for the background music of their routines. A North American
tour also helped make the show familiar to most of the rest of America before
arriving in New York. As in the Stevenson book, a well-meaning scientist, Dr. Henry
Jekyll, invents a potion that separates the noble side of man's nature from the evil,
bestial side. Using himself as guinea pig, Jekyll soon finds he has unleashed an
uncontrollable monster, Mr. Hyde, who cuts a murderous swath through London. The
first time Hyde emerges from the midnight recesses of Jekyll's psyche, he exults in
the power of his newly liberated menace, in
'·Alive!"

EVENING PRIMROSE
MUSIC AND LYRICS: Stephen Sondheim
TELEPLAY: James Goldman
DIRECTOR: Paul Bogart
TELECAST: 11/16/66
The short-lived ABC series Stage 67 presented original teleplays, mostly by theatre
writers in New York. Based on a John Collier story, Evening Primrose is about a poet
who hides out in a department store to get away from the world. Much to his
surprise, he meets hermits who have been hiding in there for years, and among them
is a girl-they fall in love. Most of the music from this show was recorded by
Bernadette Peters and Mandy Patinkin on his "Dress Casual" album.

THE HAPPY TIME – 1968

SYNOPSIS

musical in 2 Acts and 15 scenes: music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, book by N. Richard Nash

loosely based on a 1950 hit Broadway play,  The Happy Time by Samuel A. Taylor, which was in turn

based on stories by Robert Fontaine.

Broadway Theatre, New York - Opened 18th January, 1968. Closed 28 September, 1968 (286

Synopsis

Jacques Bonnard is a prize-winning photographer who travels the world. He returns to his 1920s

French-Canadian village, after five years away, seeking the happy time of his childhood. His

cantankerous but loveable father (Grandpere), two brothers and their wives, and their children all

welcome him. His stories of his travels have a profound effect on his nephew Bibi, who is having trouble

at school and going through an especially rough puberty, inspiring the boy to want to live life to the

fullest. Jacques goes to a nightclub and takes Grandpere and Bibi, where they are entertained by the

dancers (Six Angels) ("Catch My Garter"). After their night on the town, Bibi begs Jacques to "Please

Stay".

When Bibi takes Grandpere's "naughty" pictures to school and is discovered, his stern father Philippe
forces him to apologize to his school-mates. Bibi is embarrassed and upset and tries to cajole Jacques

into taking him away when he leaves. Although Jacques at first agrees, thinking that Bibi will be a

companion, he quickly realizes that this would not be good for Bibi.

Meanwhile, Jacques finds it difficult to commit to his former sweetheart Laurie ("I Don't Remember

You"). The couple finally realize that they have opposite ideas about life and the future ("Seeing

Things"), with Laurie understanding that Jacques is emotionally a boy, like her students. Grandpere,

Jacques and Bibi playfully sing an ode to "A Certain Girl". Jacques finally realizes that he returned home

searching for family and love ("Being Alive"), and understands that he must set out alone again.

Funny Girl is based on incidents in the life of the Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice shortly before, during

and after World War I and chronicles her rise from being an awkward, unattractive, stage-struck

teenager to national stardom. It also covers the story of her love for and subsequent failed marriage to

Nick Arnstein, an elegant, sophisticated an whose charm Fanny finds irresistible. The show is full of the

kind of good music that we come to expect from Jule Styne and included several show-stopping

numbers including "People" and "Don't Let It Rain on My Parade".

搞笑女孩》是根據齊格菲·愚蠢(Ziegfeld Follies)明星范妮·布里斯
(Fanny Brice)
(Jule Styne)

Too Much For One Heart (previously titled "Please") is a duet sung

by Kim and John during Act II.
The song is a conversation between the two discussing Chris' return after
three years. John tells Kim that they have come because they have found out
about Tam but he does not have the heart to tell her about Ellen, Chris' new
wife.
Too Much For One Heart was originally written as a solo for Kim describing
her excitement that her child Tam will soon be able to meet his father. This
version was cut from the repertoire during the original London production and
was rewritten as a duet (between Kim and John) with the same melody and
totally different lyrics, with the new title "Please". During the revival in 2014,
the old title was used again along with several lyric changes.
Original cast members Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson were seen singing
part of the original solo on the making of Miss Saigon documentary The Heat
Is On. Salonga also sang this version in her Broadway Concert in 2002.
Additionally, a rare early version of Too Much For One Heart surfaced in 2007
featuring the voice of Frances Ruffelle on piano.
