1. Panels
The Panels Materials library is the main design
library.
Quick Design panels are divided into several
sections with different uses. These different
materials usually have an associated sub-
method that can be found in the Materials
Styles sub-methods.
When you display the list of panels materials,
you can see that the libraries are organised into
3 sections:
1. The Quick Design section, materials named
‘000-xxxx’.
2. The Generic Materials section named ‘mate-
rial type-thickness (4 numbers)’.
3. Materials that are not meant to be included
in cutting lists named ‘z-xxx’.
Quick Design materials have a specific sort
number to the materials description. To display
the list of materials sorted by type just click the
‘Material’ title.
According to whether the list is sorted
ascending or descending, the materials will be
sorted by groups with the Quick Design mate-
rials either at the top or at the bottom of the
list.

substitute the real material references for the generic mate-

If you want to add a reference that lists the real name of the
material just type the reference into the Description field. Have a look at the Quick Design Construction Materials
video for a detailed explanation of these points.
The Quick Design Libraries contain a list of generic materials
that correspond to the texture libraries. There is today an enormous and constantly growing supply
of different manufactured panels.
If you are working with a specific panel supplier you can add
Generic Material names with the supplier’s name. As a result, customers/designers demand highly person-
alised projects with specific materials.
The naming convention used is:

Of course if you always use the same panels you can easily
change the generic panel names and characteristics to the
panels you use.

2. Edging
Edging is the material that we glue onto the edge of a panel
to cover the ‘edge’ end grain.
The Quick Design Edges Library uses only 2
types of edging:
‘0-edging/010’ and ‘0-edging/020’.

| WoodDesigner.org | 13
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

These edgings are associated with the 2 edging sub-methods,

‘0-edging 010/all-010’ and ‘0-edging/cab-010/fac020’.

By default (the sub-method ‘défaut’) the cabinets built with You can add more edging and sub-methods as necessary.

3. Bars
Bars are the material that you can use to build framed panels.
Here is a cabinet with a frame and panel door:

Bars materials have a specific section and are sold in lengths.

Quick Design Bars work in a similar way to edging.
If you make a framed panel you can quickly change the
width and thickness of all the frames simply by changing
the width and thickness of the generic Quick Design Bars.

In the latest version of the libraries we have added 2 other types of structure:
●● The hardware placement structure
●● z-p example structure
With the hardware placement structures we are able to apply hardware to single
panels that are not linked to another part, these include things like handles, feet,
hanging rails, sliding door hardware, etc. This new feature opens up a whole world
of possibilities for automating furniture design and manufacturing. Using this new
feature we have added the following:
0-hanging-rail:

Hardware Libraries
1. Fittings/Hardware
In Polyboard hardware elements or fittings are a series of
holes or grooves that can be set up as a single unit and
applied to ‘connect’ 2 panels.

| WoodDesigner.org | 24
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

The libraries are divided into folders that group the same ●● /hin : 3 characters for the hardware type, hin=hinge,
manufacturer and sub-folders that group the different types drw=draw slider, peg=shelf peg, dow=dowel, scr=screw,
of hardware. ten=tenon, etc.
The Quick Design folder contains the specific Quick Design ●● -000 : 3 numbers for a hardware reference
hardware. ●● /app : 3 or 2 characters for classification, app=applied,
bin=built-in, ext=exterior, int=interior, p=over passing
In general Quick Design libraries contain 2 types of elements or priority panel, n=under passing or non priority panel
that can be used according to the circumstances:
●● /000-000 : main drilling dimensions
a. Fixed dimension hardware ●● /000-000 : other drilling parameters
●● /x2 : number of previous elements
These elements are set up as specified by the hardware
manufacturer or are fixed dimension machined elements ●● //dow-008 : next hardware element
like holes of a certain diameter. ●● //description

Note that one Polyboard hardware fitting can be composed For instance:

We propose to add elements to the library as needed using
a naming convention as follows: ●● Minifix cam, diameter 15mm for 19mm panels, drill for

●● Azur/ : optional sort name or code to suit your company cabinet.
●● Blum : 4 to 6 characters for the brand name or type, The hardware elements supplied in the Quick Design
(optional -reference, eg: blum-253) Libraries have been limited to single elements.

| WoodDesigner.org | 25
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

Composite Fittings made of several elements like dowel and screw, cam and dowels,
etc. can be composed and used for specific applications, but to maintain and
simplify hardware management we suggest you apply several simple fittings to an
assembly, and use different rules if necessary.
Please feel free to consult us if you have a specific hardware/assembly problem that
you need help setting up.

b. Variable Quick Design hardware fittings

Fittings that are named 0-name/000 in the hardware list are Quick Design hardware
fittings.
These fittings can be used like the Quick Design materials and are meant to have
variable characteristics.
Like the Quick Design materials it’s possible to apply a fitting and then change its
definition to update all the instances of the fitting throughout a specific piece of
furniture or project.
For instance if you set up a 0-dow/001 that places an 8mm dowel fitting on all the
cabinets in a project, changing the 0-dow/001 diameter to 6mm will change all the
dowels of your project to 6mm.
These elements can be used with Quick Design rules (see the Rules library section for
more details).
If you are interested in sharing your libraries with the community post a thread on
the forum with a cabinet containing the hardware and a description and we will
include them in the next update.

2. Placement Rules
Placement Rules tell Polyboard where and how to put ●● Rules that distribute hardware at maximum distances:

There are 5 types of rules, each with it’s specific folder: ●● Rules that place one hardware element: Unique folder.
●● Quick Design rules that can be changed to fit different

a. Rules for specific hardware ●● -n = the referrence panel or zone for the measure-
ments, n = under passing (non priority), p=over passing
These rules are meant to be used when a hardware element (priority panel), z=zone
is always placed in a specific position.
For instance a drawer slider that must always be at a speci- c. Maximum distance rules:

0100-0120/0600-n/lf-rv
These rules are in folders that are named after the manufac-
turer and not meant to be changed. ●● 0100- : distance from left side = 100
●● 0120/ : distance from right side = 120
b. Fixed distance rules ●● 0600- : maximum spacing = 600
These rules place hardware at fixed intervals. This means ●● -n/ : reference n=under passing or non priority panel
that the last hardware element has a variable distance from p=over passing panel z=zone
the panel edge according to the panels dimensions. ●● lf-rv : last hardware fitting reversed
The naming convention is:
f/0037-0037/0100-n
Where :
●● f = fixed distance rule
●● /0037 = the distance of the first hardware element
●● -0037 = the minimum distance of the last hardware
element from the second board edge
●● /0100 = the distance between hardware elements

We have set up a series of rules using a stan-

dard naming format:

non priority (under passing) panel, z=free inte-
rior zone)
Other parameters that can be added:
●● /lef : distance from left
●● /rig : distance from right
●● /cen : centred
●● /lf-rv : last hardware fitting reversed or
flipped over

d. Unique hardware fittings

Similar to the Multiple hardware rules, these rules are
named:

3. Single Panel Fittings

These hardware elements are used when there is machining ●● foot = name of the fitting
to be applied to only one panel and not between 2 panels ●● /10 = diameter of the drilling
as a ‘Fitting’. ●● -thr = depth of drilling ‘thr’ = through
For example a door handle or screw-on cabinet foot. ●● //5 = diameter of next drilling
The naming convention is as follows: ●● -10 = depth of drilling
●● /f2 = face drilled
foot/10-thr/5-10/f2x4
●● x4 = number of holes

| WoodDesigner.org | 33
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

The library also contains Quick Design elements that can be

updated on the fly.
These are named:
0-handle-hor/010
Where:
●● 0 = indicates a Quick Design element
●● -handle-hor = is the type
●● /010 = the number
Of course you can rename any method to your convenience.
Note that some of these hardware elements are used in the
structures libraries to place specific hardware like sliding
door rollers and handles.

Sub-methods Libraries
Sub-methods are like style sheets that you can apply to your project.
Each type of sub-method will set up a specific aspect of the project to follow a
preset series of rules.
Note that although Sub-Methods can be grouped into one Manufacturing
Method, which in turn can be applied to a project, you’ll often find it more
useful to apply each sub-method separately according to your needs.
This gives better control over the way your projects are built and makes it easier
to mix different methods.
The following pages look at the different Sub-Methods that are available.

2. Materials Style
The Materials Style Sub-Methods work in conjunc-
tion with the Materials libraries.
The Default (Défaut in French) method will set your
projects using the Quick Design materials, using
one material by panel. This will make it easier to
change the aspect of each different part of your
project.
This is fine if you are using an approved supplier,
but if you want to build your project yourself, you
need to apply a Materials Sub-Method that will
give a coherent cutting list.
To change the materials to get a grouped cutting
list apply a method that groups the materials by
structure.
The naming convention we use is the following:
‘mela/car-19/int-16/bac-08/fac-egger 0190’ ●● /fac-Egger 0190: facade elements
●● mela : main material The sub-methods mainly use the manufacturer’s name and the thick-

3. Edges Style
This sub-method will tell Polyboard how and
when to apply edging materials to the parts
of your project.
The Edges Style Sub-Method works in
conjunction with the Edges Materials library.
Change the Edging Material library to change
globally all the edging of your projects.
The Quick Design methods have been set up
to apply edging only to visible edges.
If you need edging on other panels you’ll
have to edit the method or better make a
copy and edit the copy.

5. Fittings Links or Hardware Sub-methods

The Fittings Links Sub-Method enables you to assign hardware to panels.
Each hardware type is associated with a placement rule that will tell Polyboard
how to machine each panel.
The naming convention used is the following:
z-ed//VB36-010//Rafix-010//bck-screw
●● z- and zz- : sort code to make this element appear at the bottom of the list
●● ed = type of fitting, ed=edge drilling, nest=nesting (face drilling only), hw =
hardware specific method
●● //VB36 = main hardware name used
●● -010 : hardware type (010,020 Quick Design types)
●● //Rafix : next hardware element
●● -010 = hardware type
●● //bck-screw = description of extra elements
The Fittings Links sub-methods library also includes a series of Quick Design
methods.
These methods use the Quick Design hardware fittings and an associated Quick
Design rule.
These sub-methods are names by hardware name - 010 through to 040//.
Applying these sub-methods will enable you change all the hardware and their
distribution rules by changintg their definition in the Quick Design library.

6. Regular Drillings
Regular Drillings are holes that are drilled into
the upright panels to comply with the 32mm
system of assembly.
You can apply these drilling to a cabinet by
highlighting a Zone, right clicking and choosing
‘Regular drillings’ in the mouse menu.
Note that the drillings will only be added if you
have added a ‘Positioning Rule’.
In general choose the 37-37/600z rule.

| WoodDesigner.org | 52
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

In the Quick Design Libraries we have 2 main sub-methods.

| WoodDesigner.org | 53

holes globally so continuously along a panel

| WoodDesigner.org | 54
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

zone/10-10/c/z/37-37/600z : this will activate holes only

in a specific zone

The naming convention is:

glob/10-10/c/z/37-37/600z
●● glob: global drilling continuously along panel or
drilling by zone
●● 10-10/ : first lower hole distance from bottom and
minimum last hole distance from top
●● c/ : continuous or groups of holes separated by a
specific distance
●● z/ : placement reference z=in the zone p=panel
●● 37-37/600z = positioning rule
You can duplicate these methods and adjust them to
your specific needs.

Door 1/bin/1.5-3/apd/3 Door 4/no hardware
●● This is the standard door type ●● Door setup for no automatic hardware
●● bin = built in in door ●● To be used when non standard hardware is required
●● /1.5 = 1.5mm slack

7. Drawers
This sub-method sets all the parameters for building
drawers.

| WoodDesigner.org | 57
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

But unlike doors, the drawers sub-method also includes the inner
drawer construction that you can access by clicking the ‘Assembly’
button.
Like the ‘box full’ sub-method, the drawer sub-methods contain a
specific reference method which we have called the ‘priorities’. The
priorities define how the drawer’s inside components are placed.
The Drawer sub-method library contain 2 types of drawer set up:

Hardware specific setup

These drawer styles set up the drawer panels to receive the drawer
hardware of a specific manufacturer. Note that often a manu-
facturer will have several variations of the same drawer type. For
pre-manufactured drawers, these usually refer to different drawer
heights.
These drawer set ups can be used with the hardware and fittings
links libraries to set up automatically the drawer panels and
hardware.

Self manufactured drawers

The other methods define how the inners of a drawer are built
when you need to manufacture them in house.
These methods’ names start with the text ‘H’ or ‘I’ that reference the
‘priorities’ and define how the façades of the drawer react, in the
same way as the box-full sub-methods.

| WoodDesigner.org | 58
Wood Designer | Polyboard Quick Design Libraries

The drawer priorities methods are coded as follows:

H-000//sp-all//ls-12.7
●● H = the sides are over passing the front and back
●● 000 = the type or variation of H
●● //sp = side priority
●● -all = over all other panels
●● //ls = lateral slack
●● -12.7 = ls value

9. Assembled Pieces
This library works with the Panel Structures and Bars libraries.
See the Panels Structures and Bar Materials sections to see how they work.
Note however that applying an Assembled Pieces Sub-method to your
cabinet will modify all the framed panels in your cabinet, whereas applying
an Assembly Structure using the Properties menu will only change the
specific panel you are working on.
