Abraham Lincoln

The 16th president of the United States


1.Early history:
• Born in Hardin County, Kentucky
February 12th, 1809
• 1816 The Lincolns moved to Indiana
• 1830 he moves with his family to Illinois
Honest Abe:
• Abraham Lincoln's nickname „Honest Abe“
came from his honesty and decency as a young
man
2.Beginning of political career:
• On August 4th, 1834, Abe is elected to the
Illinois General Assembly
• In 1836 Lincoln is reelected, he also gets his
license to start practicing law
• In 1836 Lincoln becomes the Whig party
floor leader
3.Blows of fate:
• Abraham mother dies when he was 9 years old
• only one of his four sons reaches the adult age, two of them die during
Lincoln's lifetime
4.Leading up to presidency:
• In 1856 Lincoln helps to create the new Republican Party of Illinois
• In 1857 Lincoln speaks against the Dred Scott decision
5.Start of a new career:
• In 1860 Abraham Lincoln is nominated to presidency for the Republican Party
• He wins the presidential race
• 1861: beginning of the Civil War begins
6.Successes:
• 22nd September 1862 he signs a law abolishing slavery
• 1864: reelected president of the United States
• 1865: end of the Civil War
• April 11th: 1865 Lincoln makes final speech as president,
focus: problems of reconstruction of the country
7.Assassination of Lincoln:
• April 14th, 1865 Lincoln is assassinated
by John Wilkes Booth
• April 15th, 1865 President Lincoln
8.Lincoln’s Goal Came true:
• After Lincoln passes away, the 13th
Amendment to the Constitution is passed
on December 18th, 1865, saying that
slavery is finally abolished
• However: discrimination against people
with dark skin still exists today
• today there is still a huge amount of
discrimination against black people =>
