TEACHING SESSION PLAN

Module: Sustainability in the Construction Industry – Level / Stage 7

Construction and Demolition Waste Year: 2

Title of session/ topic: Material selection at design concept – focus on sustainability

Length of session: 2 hours
Mark the type of session:

Lecture √ Tutorial ☐ Lab ☐ Studio ☐ Workshop √

Module Outcome (What module outcome(s) is the class/session aligned to):
1. Detail the construction of concrete, steel and timber frame commercial and industrial
buildings including multi-storey construction.

2. Discuss and compare the advantages and disadvantages of concrete, timber, steel frame
and hybrid non-residential construction methods and materials.

3. Design and detail low energy commercial and industrial buildings and recognise their
environmental impact

Class/Session Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, you should be able to: (Share
with students e.g. Write on board /slide/ project image at beginning of lecture for students)

Class outcomes:

Part 1

 Describe a sustainable material

 Identify sustainable construction materials
 Assess the advantages and disadvantages of different construction materials
 Analyse the benefits of reuse/ recycle construction material verses the materials sent to
landfill
 recognising the environmental impact of construction materials
 Understanding the process of reusing construction material on site
 To apply the whole life cycle of the material when designing or value engineering a
building

Part 2

• A survey is used as an activity assessment prior and post lecture this is used by the
students as a reflection on the advantages and disadvantages of both demolition waste
going to landfill and recycle/ reuse process of the construction material on site.
Part 3

• A survey is used as an activity assessment prior and post lecture this is used by the
students as a reflection on the advantages and disadvantages of both demolition waste
going to landfill and recycle/ reuse process of the construction material on site.
Select & Prioritise Your Content:
For the session, decide what material is used in class and what material the students should study
independently and/or online. To do this, think about the material and its relative importance and
prioritise and list in the appropriate quadrant.
In Class or in a Live Online Class Independent Learning

Material in quadrants 1 and 3 typically become the focus during classes. Quadrants 2
and 4 represent material students could study themselves and use the VLE/Moodle and
online learning objects to support this learning.
Think about how you might incorporate Technology Enhanced Learning Tools and Blended
Online/Digital Learning Objects, that will develop students learning and engagement with the
module.

The Construction Video is pre-recorded. Going forward I propose pre-record my PowerPoint

presentation so that it can be viewed during class time and the students can to review some
additional resources to supplement the presentation. This would have given them more of a
background on Sustainability if they require it.
