CONCEPT

Student Centre in a broader aspect is the

STUDENT CENTER
facilities provided to students for recreation
and socialisation. The point from where I
initiated my design and later which got
translated into my built form, started with the
feeling of spaces, I imagined it space as to how INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY | MANDI
it should perform, the site is quite challenging,
sustainability being a constraint , minimum cut
and fill to be advocated.

I got inspiration from the site itself, the way the

site is sandwiched between Himalayan ranges, I
tried to follow that same pattern, therefore
after having discussion with my design faculty
and finally came up with idea of having two
paths within my site, the primary road being
the one which goes through the residential
block and the other one which would be there
within the student centre. There would be two
access roads the later being pedestrian only.
The student centre is as a result sits
comfortably within the two road and is divided
by a narrow channel of a water body coming
from the top of the mountain.

Initially I had very fluidic design , my forms were

free flowing and were inspired from the
contours, but then with the input of practicality
and functions and limitation in terms of
software knowledge, I tried to stick as close to
my forms which I have derived earlier. There is
POROCITY IN DESIGN
an amalgamation of open to sky spaces and
semi open spaces which translates to proper

daylighting and sustainability. There is a bridge

which connects the two clusters . The bridge is
at a level of 600mm above road level so as to
have a commanding view towards the river. All
the buildings opens out towards the river, the
view towards the river is intentional.
SHADOW PATTERN FOR 21ST JUNE

Buildings would receive excessive direct

solar gain during summer considering
their East-West (or similar) orientation.
Their orientation or appropriate
strategies to shade east and west façade
(eg. by trees, shading devices) to be SHADOW PATTERN FOR 21ST MARCH / SEPTEMBER
considered. North-South (or similar)
Orientation is advisable.

SOLAR PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES

South facing solar glass is a key component

of any passive solar system. In my design,
the system includes enough solar glazing for
good performance in winter, but not so much
that cooling performance in summer will be
compromised.

SOUTH FACING GLASS

SIMPLE YET EFFICIENT

The sunlight through south-facing

glazing falls directly into the

space to be heated. and is stored

in thermal mass incorporated into
the floor or interior walls. Total
south facing glass area is 8% of
the entire facades. Double Glazing
Panel is used.

STUDENT LOUNGE
This is the lower most position of my design,
it tries to bridge the gap between the river
and the valley by going another step down
and opening onto the river. A very
spectacular few of the river can be enjoyed.
To overcome the grandeur of the structures,
I’ve tried to break their hegemonic character
by introducing horizontal lines running
several times across the facades. The facades
are always going in and out , again trying to
break the monotony and further adds to the
sustainability through solar passive design
norms. The design is porous , there is no
FOOD COURT (GROUND FLOOR) main gate entry to the student centre, one of
the characteristic feature of my design is that
people can enter into the complex from
whichever way they like , this is for the
convenience of the users.
