Les Miserables
Movie Review
Les miserables
I.INTRODUCTION

Les Misérables is a 2012 epic period musical film directed by Tom Hooper and written by

William Nicholson, Alain Boublil, and Claus Michael Schonberg (who also wrote the song).and

Les Misérables is a French historical novel by Victor Hugo that was first published in year 1862

and is considered as one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. The story takes place in

France, Paris and nearby places from the year 1815 to 1832. Within his dramatic story are

themes that capture the intellect and the emotions: crime and punishment, the relentless

persecution of Valjean by Inspector Javert, the desperation of the prostitute Fantine, the

amorality of the rogue Thénardier, and the universal desire to escape the prisons of our own

minds. Les Misérables  gave Victor Hugo a canvas upon which he portrayed his criticism of the

French political and judicial systems, but the portrait that resulted is larger than life, epic in

scope an extravagant spectacle that dazzles the senses even as it touches the heart and base on

what I read about the writter of les miserable which is victor hugo, when hugo first writting les

miserable he had been gathering the material all his life many of the characters show traces of his

own personal experience.

II-summary
An ex-convict also known as Jean Valjean, wanders into the bishop's village one day and finds

himself unable to find food or lodging because everyone turns him away. The bishop provides

him with a place to stay and even forgives him when he the convict steals the bishop's nicest

cutlery. If that isn't enough, the bishop agrees to let the convict, keep the silver if he promises to

live a morally upright life from now on. Jean Valjean rises to become a wealthy factory owner

and town leader, but he never forgets his humble beginnings. He gives away more than half of

his money to the poor and can't stop doing good deeds, such as promising a destitute prostitute

named Fantine that he'll look after her daughter after she dies. But there's a catch, he's technically

in violation of his parole because he's changed his name and assumed a new identity. After a

dedicated police officer named Inspector Javert tracks him down, Valjean is imprisoned again

until he escapes by faking his death. When he ends up getting out, he finds and adopts Fantine's

daughter Cosette, who has been living with some really nasty people named Thénardier. To

avoid Inspector Javert, Valjean moves with her to Paris and raises her in a convent. Years pass,

and Jean and Cosette leave the convent. But things become complicated when Cosette falls in

love with Marius, a young man. Valjean, fearful of drawing attention to himself, decides to take

Cosette and relocate to England, where they will be safe from the French authorities and

Cosette's new admirer. When Marius knows that Cosette is leaving, he decides he has nothing to

live for and joins a Parisian revolt. Valjean's conscience prickles, and he sets out to rescue him

from the spectacularly doomed revolt. He also saves Inspector Javert from being assassinated by

rebels, because he's that kind of guy. Javert is so confused by this act of kindness that he jumps

off a bridge and commits suicide. After Marius and Cosette marry, Valjean decides that now is

the time to reveal his criminal past to Marius, who then decides that Valjean should avoid

Cosette in the future. However, once Marius discovers that Valjean saved his life, He becomes

enraged. He wishes to reintroduce the man into Cosette's life. However, it is too late. Valjean's
hurt feelings have already drained him. He dies with Cosette and Marius standing over his bed,

declaring their love for him. Everything is bittersweet, especially when set to music.

A.Title
First impression to catch a glimpse of the story of a movie is by reading its Title. Most movie
maker makes their movie title more enticing to get more viewers. The “Les Miserables” is a
French word which means “The Miserables” in English. The title itself shows the hardship on the
main character in the movie and how he changed it to a more peaceful and meaningful way of
life.

B. characterization/setting
Anne Hatway plays Fatine, a mother whose daughter is Cosette. Their lives are complicated, so
she left her daughter only with thenardiers and went looking for work, eventually becoming a
prostitute in order to give money to her daughter. Amanda seyfried, who in turn played Cosette,
had a child handicap and was forced to work as a maid before Valjean saw her and bought it
from the thenardiers. Hugh Jackman, who played Jean Valjean, spent more than 19 years in tulon
prison for stealing bread and attempting to flee the prison. Marius Pontmercy, played by Eddie
Redmayne, is a revolutionary student who is friends with the thenardiers daughter of the
cardholders Éponine, but he has feelings for Cosette. Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron
Cohen act as Thénardiers, a pair of crooks and their eponine daughter. Samantha Barks plays
Éponine, Thénardiers' daughter, who is so faithful to her friend marius because she love him that
she does everything he says. Russell Crowe plays Javert, a police officer who dedicates his life to
the re-incarceration of Jean Valjean. Aaron Tveit as Enjolras, the leader of Les Amis de. Daniel
Huttlestone as Gavroche, the clever and brave urchin on the street and The story takes place in
France, Paris and nearby places from the year 1815 to 1832

c.cinematography

It's great to have it, and the angles in the cast, as well as the camera movement, are perfect. I can
tell there's a lot of drama here, and the nice editing adds to it.

D.theme

“Fight for our lives”

In Les Misérables, Erojolras formed a group to battle the armies because the armies were cruel to
the people and did not treat the poor people fairly, so he sacrificed himself to bring them justice.
E.MESSAGE
Les Miserables (The Miserable) has relayed many valuable lessons with its sensational attack on
poverty, equality, sovereignty, youth, forgiveness, and justice. In this story, it is shown that the
youth are skilled and strong enough to make or initiate even the biggest of changes if they are
willing to do so. It has also relayed a message we all know, but not really apply in real life.
Forgiveness sets a man free. Forgiveness for others. For all the wrongdoings they have done to
you. Most importantly, forgiving yourself. Forgiving yourself on your lapses, wrong choices, and
fears.
F.overall impression

I like the movie, as It is very accurate, from outfits and location it indicates the time it was set.
The speeches of each character also indicate the time of the June rebellion perfectly. Even from
the songs and such that present the citizen's point of view during that time being.

III-conclusion
“Les Miserables” is a powerful musical set back by Hollywood’s excesses. Those people who
are an avid fan of the novel or musical will love the film, but others may be deferred by the long
run time and the dark nature of the story. Moreover, as a Catholic. I strongly recommend that the
film will be viewed as a look at the world of those who reject the Lord. It depicts the dark world
which men make when God is hold in contempt. Valjean finds a way out this sewer by finding
God. So can we all, through Jesus.
