Government: Does Texas provide a Limited government, republicanism,
checks and balances, federalism, separation of powers, popular sovereignty and individual rights through its Constitution? Step 1 Desired Academic Outcomes My students will be able to recognize the principles reflected on the Texas Constitution. My students will be able to define concepts such as republicanism, checks and balances, separation of powers, popular sovereignty, etc. Step 2 Goal-Aligned Instructional Strategy To activate my student’s prior That Works knowledge, I would show the class a short five-to-seven-minute video on the basic principles of Texas Constitution. My students will interact with flashcards on Nearpod or Jamboard that will include the definitions of the government, republicanism, checks and balances, etc. After they have activated their prior knowledge and have been familiarized with the terms, I will hand them and excerpt with parts from the Texas Constitution, in which the students will have to highlight the parts that cover the terms above to demonstrate their understanding. Step 3 Choose Digital Tool Nearpod, Jamboard, YouTube My student’s will be able to think of ways to help their groupmates understand the given Constitutional Principals by using Nearpod flashcards as a tool. They will watch examples and applications of the Principles in the YouTube video, then they will be able to present their own examples from society. These modern tools will elevate the Rigor/Relevence level of my students by motivating all to participate in synergistic activities where more advanced students will guide and advise their less advanced groupmates to increase their learning. These tools will enhance my instructional strategies by being on point with the lesson while allowing students to work with classmates through modern technological means that they are very familiar with. Step 4 Plan Blended Instruction My students will work in groups of three or four. Each group will be assigned to find two of the Constitutional principles and engage in an interactive instruction with each other. I will walk around their tables to answer any possible questions or question the direction of their progress to help them navigate towards the correct answers. Step 5 Self-Assessment My students will be able to move up their quads by developing an understanding of the concepts and figure out if the principles are applied in real life and how can be recognized. My students will be able to analyze their understanding of the new constitutional principles they will have learned, and then be able to determine if they can be observed today in Texas society. My students will develop an understanding about the Government of Texas and engage feel comfortable to engage in a conversation with their classmates or their parents about the principles of the Constitution and explain their value.
