1. GENERAL

This specification will cover the proper application of the Denso ST 100 system for the internal
lining of welded field joints.

The joint lining system will be applied in accordance with Denso’s technical data sheets and method
statement. The lining system will be applied in accordance with size specifications per Denso
recommendations.

The pipeline contractor responsible for the application of the lining system will furnish all
equipment and properly trained and supervised labour and service required for the specified
application of the lining system. All equipment and tools required for the application of the lining
system will be subject to the approval of the end-user company. The pipeline contractor will follow
the Denso application specifications and work in harmony with representatives of Denso and the
end-user to alleviate any difficulties during the application and installation.

The contractor will be responsible for verifying the integrity of the coated field joint. Damaged
coating will be repaired at the contractor's expense. The pipeline contractor will supply all repair
material.

Denso will supply a Technical Representative to assist or instruct the contractor and/or the end-
user coating inspector with the proper application of the lining system.

The Denso Technical Representative will have the authority, through the end-user representative,
to suspend the application of the lining system until such time as the application satisfies Denso
application and quality control standards for the lining system.

Inspection of coated Field Joint will be performed by qualified coating inspectors appointed by the
end-user. The lining system will be applied by Denso certified trained personnel in the application
of the joint lining system and meet the approval of Denso.

2. MATERIAL STORAGE

All coating material will be stored, handled and transported in such a manner as to prevent damage
to individual carton containers. Cartons, tape rolls or individual repair rolls removed from the
storage pallets will not be dropped, rolled, or thrown in any manner as to damage the coating
material.

Cartons or tape rolls will not be handled with hooks, ropes, cables or any other mechanical devices
that could damage the coating materials.

The coating material will be stored and/or transported in a dry, ventilated location. Storage
temperature will be a minimum of 10° C and not exceed 25° C.

Coating materials that have been damaged or show signs of deterioration will be inspected by
representatives of Denso and at the discretion of the end-user, be rejected.

Primer will be stored in accordance with regulations that govern hazardous material storage. Primer
inventory will rotate on a first in - first out basis. Primer containers will be marked with receiving
dates.

Lining system waste material, primer containers, stub rolls, empty cartons, release liners, separator
papers and related waste materials WILL NOT be discarded along the pipeline right-of-way or in
the pipeline trench.

All cartons and tins are marked with batch numbers, these batch numbers must be recorded by the
applicator, each field joint that is lined must have the batch number of the Denso ST 100 recorded
to the field joint number for easy reference.

3 SURFACE PREPARATION

3.1 The bare Field Joint Surface will be prepared to a recommended standard of Sa2½ as specified
by the Swedish Standards Association:

Sa2½: Near White Blast Cleaning

Removal of nearly all mill scale, rust, rust scale, paint or foreign matter by the use
of abrasive propelled through nozzles or by centrifugal wheels, to the degree
hereafter specified. A Near-White Blast Cleaned Surface Finish is defined as one
from which all oil, grease, dirt, mill scale, rust, corrosion products, oxides, paint
or other foreign matter have been completely removed from the surface except for
very light shadows, very slight streaks or slight discolorations caused by rust stain,
mill scale oxides or light, tight residues of paint or coating that may remain. At
least 95% (percent) of each square inch of surface area will be free of all visible
residues, and the remainder will be limited to the light discoloration mentioned
above.

The presence of oil, grease or tar will be determined using a water spray.

A degreaser must be used to remove oil, grease or tar if present and washed with water and clean,
lint free rags. A solvent is not recommended as a solvent only spreads grease or oil.

If the above cleaning process has been carried out, the field joint area will be rinsed with fresh
potable water and dried before further processing.

Any defects in the steel substrate (i.e. slivers, laminations, etc.) will be highlighted to the clients’
representative for disposition.

On completion of the surface preparation, all residual grit and dust will be removed using dry, clean
compressed air.

3.2 The Shop Applied Coating shall be prepared by lightly abrading the surface using 80
Grit Sand Paper or sweep blasting to create a profile.

and clean, lint free rags. A solvent is not recommended as a solvent only spreads grease
or oil.

If the above cleaning process has been carried out, the field joint area will be rinsed with

On completion of the surface preparation, all residual grit and dust will be removed using

Notes:

1. Clients’ representative will confirm acceptability of blast cleaning.

2. Water, oil traps and filters will be fitted to ALL compressors and blast cleaning equipment.
3. Blast cleaning will not be allowed to contaminate coating operations or the coated surface
during the coating period.
4. All inspections are to be recorded on the relevant inspection reports. In case of negative
results, the next 3 (three) joints will be tested to ensure correct results are recorded. If
further deficiencies are found the cause will be identified and corrected.
5. All inspection equipment must be calibrated with current certificates.

3. DENSO ST 100 APPLICATION

The surface will have no condensation, precipitation or any other forms of contamination on the
blasted surface prior to coating.

The substrate temperature range for application of Denso ST 100 is 15ºC to 40ºC. The substrate
temperature must be a minimum of 3ºC above the dew point temperature before proceeding with
the coating operation. Ambient temperature may be lower than 4ºC if the substrate is heated. Pre-
heating may be accomplished by means of a propane torch or induction coil prior to blasting.

Denso ST 100 will be applied to the specified Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of 400µm minimum.

Before mixing Part A (catalyst) & Part B (resin), make sure that they match in both material and
size as specified on the containers. Mix Part B first, independent of Part A, then pour contents
into Part A. mix until a uniform colour has been achieved ensuring that you scrape both the
bottom and sides of the container. This mixing process should last for approximately 2 (two)
minutes and there should be no streaks visible in the container.

Application will take place IMMEDIATELY after mixing.

Denso ST 100 may be applied by Applicator Pad.

The thickness of the Denso ST 100 will be checked periodically using a Wet Film Gauge to
achieve the minimum wet film thickness as specified. Once the Denso ST 100 has cured to a tack-
free condition, the owners’ representative and/or the contractors’ inspector will measure the film
thickness with an appropriate Dry Film Thickness Gauge and notify the applicator of their
acceptance. Notification to the applicator of any inadequately coated sections must be made
immediately.

Over-coating, when necessary, may be done as soon as the coating has gelled (i.e Tack Free) and
within a maximum period of 12 hours at 25 ºC. If this window period has lapsed, the surface will
be roughed prior to application of the overcoat using 80 Grit Sand Paper or sweep blasting to
create a profile, followed by a solvent wipe with MEK or Denso Epoxy Thinners
