process management, handling input and output, and controlling peripheral devices such as
disk drives and printers.

Types of Operating system

Real-time operating system
Real-time operating system is used to control machinery, scientific instruments and industrial
systems. It has a very little interface.
Single user/Single tasking OS
This operating system is designed to manage the computer so that one user can effectively do
one thing at a time.
Single user/Multitasking OS
This is the type of operating system most people use on their desktop and laptop computers
today. For example, Microsoft's Windows and Apple's MacOS platforms
Multi user/Multitasking OS
A multi-user operating system allows many different users to take advantage of the computer's
resources simultaneously. For example, UNIX.

User Interface
The user interface (UI) is the point of human-computer interaction and communication in a
device. This can include display screens, keyboards, a mouse and the appearance of a desktop.
Through this user interface a person controls a software application or hardware device.
