Brittanica defined popular art, as any dance, literature, music, theatre, or other
art form intended to be received and appreciated by ordinary people in a literate and
technologically advanced society dominated by the vast urban culture. Popular art in the
20th century is usually being dependent on such technologies of reproduction or
distribution such as the television sets, printing, photography, digital compact disc and
tape recording, motion pictures, radio, and videocassettes. By the late 20th century,
television sets had unquestionably become the dominant vehicle for popular art and
entertainment since most media and visual aspects are being presented through this
technology. Motion pictures are also an important medium of popular art but, in contrast
to television, can more often attain the enduring significance and appeal of works
belonging to the fine or elite arts.

Knowing the relevance of popular art to the media and literature, the term
"popular writings" are actually referring to mechanisms written for a general audience or
that have a broad following. It differs from creative literature in that it is largely intended
to amuse. Unlike high literature, popular literature does not strive for formal elegance or
subtlety, and it is not meant to last. The rise of modern literature has been in lockstep
with the rise of popular culture. Popular literature has grown in lockstep with the
dissemination of literacy through education, aided by technical advancements in
printing. Through the Industrial Revolution, works of literature that were historically only
available to select, well-educated elite became available to vast portions, if not
majorities, of a society.

Now the thin line between artistic and popular literature is kind of blurry, with a lot
of crossovers that is on-going and evident between the two groups based on an existing
cultural taste and later critical assessment. William Shakespeare was regarded as a
writer of popular literature when he was alive, but he is now regarded as a founder of
artistic literature. Indeed, the most common criterion for classifying a work as
mainstream literature is whether it is ephemeral, that is, whether it loses its appeal and
meaning over time. Romance is and has always been the most prominent genre of
popular literature, covering the middle Ages up to the present days. The most popular
form of romance represents the difficulties faced by two people usually, the young
lovers who are involved in an illicit relationship. Fantasy, or science fiction, is another
common genre of this literature. Novels set in the 19th century on the United States'
western frontier, known as westerns, are also prominent. Finally, the detective tale, also
known as a murder mystery, is a prevalent genre of fiction.
The very common connection of media and the contemporary literature
according to William Egginton and Bernadette Wegenstein of The Johns Hopskins
University are such different material ways in which knowledge can be shared are
referred to as media. Data research and media theory are disciplines devoted to
analyzing and comprehending the various media by which content is transmitted. The
media in which literature is transmitted is no longer considered subordinate to the
literary material or form, but rather worthy of attention under the influence of these
fields. They further defined the connection by saying that the medium of dissemination,
as well as the specific modes of media in use at the time and place of creation, may and
do have a significant impact on literary material and structure. Literature's reception may
also be influenced by prevalent media forms. We'll look at past aspects of the
relationship between literature and media, as well as examples from a number of
genres.

Humans will now communicate history, thoughts, tell tales, publish theory,
challenge culture, and discuss legislation, regulations, and government by literature. We
should benefit from other cultures' literature as well as our own, from people who think
differently than we do, and through evocative stories and poetry, we can plumb the
depths of our own feeling.  Even ancient literature has provided us with archetypes to
use in modern writing, such as the flawed hero, the quest, defiance of the gods and
personalizing the story of the rise and fall of civilizations. Literature is a representation
of society and a means of communicating with one another. When listening to another
person's voice, we will get a sense of how the person feels. Literature is significant to
me because of its intent, and novels create a dialogue in a world that is becoming
increasingly disconnected from human contact.
