Introduction

Mathematics plays an important role in accelerating the social ,economical, and


technological growth of a nation. It is more so in India, as nation is rapidly moving
towards globalization in all aspects.
The world of today which leans more and more heavily on science and technology
demands more and more mathematical knowledge on the part of its people. So, it is
necessary to prepare the child with a strong base of mathematical knowledge to face
the challenges of the modern technological society.

Intended Learning Outcomes

A. Identify patterns in nature and regularities in the world(knowledge)


B. Articulate the importance of mathematics in one’s life(values)
C. Argue about the nature of mathematics, what it is, how it is expressed, represented,
and used.(knowledge)
D. Express appreciation for mathematics as a human endeavor.(values)

What is mathematics all about?
- numbers, symbols, equations, operations, functions, calculations, abstractions,
devising proofs

How is mathematics done?


• with curiosity
• with a penchant for seeking patterns and generalities
• with the desire to know the truth
• with trial and error
• without fear of facing more questions and problems to solve

Who uses mathematics?


• mathematicians (pure and applied)
• scientists (natural and social)
• everyone

Why is mathematics important to know / learn?


• It puts order in disorder.
• It helps us become better persons.
• It helps make a world a better place to live in.

THE STUDY OF PATTERNS

Fibonacci Sequence

The Fibonacci Sequence is the series of numbers:

0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, ...

The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it:

 the 2 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+1),


 the 3 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+2),
 the 5 is (2+3),
 and so on!

Example: the next number in the sequence above is 21+34 = 55

One of the famous patterns observed in nature is the Fibonacci Sequence introduced by
Leonardo of Pisa (also known as Fibonacci)

Golden Ratio

φ The golden ratio (symbol is the Greek letter "phi" shown at left) is a special number
approximately equal to 1.618. It appears many times in geometry, art, architecture and other areas.
The Idea Behind It

We find the golden ratio when we divide a line into two parts so that:

the long part divided by the short part


is also equal to
the whole length divided by the long part
