different.
Wish + (that) + subject + verb (simple past form)
- I wish (that) earthquakes didn’t happen. (they happen)
- I wish I spoke Italian. (I don’t speak Italian) - I wish I had a big car. (I don’t have a big car) - I wish I were on a beach. (I’m in the office) - I wish it were the weekend. (It’s only Wednesday) WISH: To suggest you are sorry or you regret about a specific situation.
Wish + (that) + subject + verb (past perfect)
- I wish (that) last year’s earthquake hadn’t happened.
- I wish I hadn’t eaten so much. (I ate a lot) - I wish they had come on holiday with us. (They didn’t come on holiday) - I wish I had studied harder at school. (I was lazy at school) HOPE: To say that we want a situation to be different in the future, or to say what we want to happen.
Wish + (that) + subject + verb (simple present)
- I hope (that) we get no more earthquakes this year.
- I hope it’s sunny tomorrow. - I hope she passes her exam next week. - I hope the plane doesn’t crash tomorrow.
