PAST TENSE

I. INTRODUCTION: SIMPLE PAST

1. Affirmative Structure
SUBJECT + MAIN VERB (SIMPLE PAST) + COMPLEMENT
(regular o irregular verb) *

* There are two types of verbs to be conjugated using the SIMPLE PAST TENSE: Regular
verbs and Irregular verbs.

EXAMPLES:

a. Using REGULAR verbs

Angeline worked hard for the project. All regular verbs have ED at the end of them,
in order be conjugated.
b. Using IRREGULAR verbs.
The basketball team put the ball inside correctly. The irregular verbs do not suffer
any change, or they do some little changes or change completely; it depends.

2. Negative Structure
SUBJECT + DID NOT (DIDN’T) + M.F.V. + C
a. Using REGULAR verbs
Angeline did not work hard for the project. All regular verbs DON’T have ED at the
end of them, in order be conjugated, because of the auxiliar DID.
b. Using IRREGULAR verbs.
The basketball team did not put the ball inside correctly. The irregular verb remains
the same, because of the auxiliar DID.
3. Interrogative Structure:
YES/NOT QUESTION
DID + SUBJECT + M.F.V. + C + Q. M.
a. Using REGULAR verbs
Did Angeline work hard for the project?. All regular verbs DON’T have ED at the
end of them, in order be conjugated, because of the auxiliar DID.
b. Using IRREGULAR verbs.
Did The basketball team put the ball inside correctly? The irregular verb remains the
same, because of the auxiliar DID.
MULTIPLE ANSWERS QUESTIONS
WH-WORD + DID + SUBJECT + M.F.V. + C. + Q.M.
a. Using REGULAR verbs
Why didn’t Angeline work hard for the project? All regular verbs DON’T have ED
at the end of them, in order be conjugated, because of the auxiliar DID.
b. Using IRREGULAR verbs.
Why didn’t the basketball team put the ball inside correctly? The irregular verb
remains the same, because of the auxiliar DID.
