SPICES BOARD, constituted under an Act of Parliament as an Export


Promotional Organization, under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry,
Government of India has nurtured and guided the destiny of spice sector,
with right promotional interventions.
The relentless efforts of Spices Board during the last two decades helped
the industry to focus on quality, technology and value addition and geared up
the Indian spice industry to face the onslaught of global competition; the
unprecedented growth in spice exports that India has achieved, crossing one
billion US $ for the first time is an eloquent testimony to our commitment to
quality, food safety and technology and on the strenuous efforts put in by the
exporters who successfully competed in the global market and emerged winners.
The current focus of the Spices Board is establishing regional quality testing
laboratories, research into new uses, flavours, applications and medicinal,
nutraceutical properties and other functional attributes of spices and
establishing spice parks at major spice trading centres with latest technology
in spice cleaning, processing, packing and ware housing and preparing North
Eastern region as the production hub for organic spices.
Spices Board congratulates all the exporters who have won trophies and

growers who have won awards for achieving highest productivity for cardamom
[small & large] and vanilla.

CARDAMOM AWARD
(2005 & 2006)
(Elettaria cardamomum Maton)
Cardamom Award was instituted by the Spices Board to recognize and
encourage growers who have achieved outstanding productivity in cardamom.
The award consists of one first prize and two second prizes. The first prize
carries a cash award of Rs.25,000/-, a citation and a certificate. Each second
prize carries a cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a citation and a certificate. The
winners of the Cardamom Award for the year 2005 & 2006 were selected based
on the nominations received and verified during 2004-05 & 2005-06 seasons
respectively. During 2006-07, Cardamom Awards were not considered due to
lack of eligible applications.

2004-05 CARDAMOM AWARD
FIRST PRIZE
Sri. Joseph Chacko is a progressive cardamom grower
owning a small holding of one hectare in Vazaveedu in Idukki
district of Kerala. The productivity of this holding replanted during
the year 2000 was 4100 kgs. of cured cardamom per hectare.
High yielding planting materials, maintenance of soil fertility
through judicious application of organic manures and systematic
soil and moisture conservation practices helped him in reaching
the coveted position of the best cardamom grower attaining
the highest productivity during the year.

SECOND PRIZE

Sri. K.R.Mahendran is a small grower hailing from Erode


district of Tamil Nadu owning 1.60 hectares of cardamom land
in Myladumpara village in Idukki district of Kerala. Productivity
obtained by him during 2004-05 is 3300 kg/hectare of cured
cardamom.
This significant performance was possible because of adoption
of scientific management practices, timely plant protection
measures, effective nutrient management and personal attention.

2004-05 CARDAMOM AWARD
SECOND PRIZE
Sri. Purushothama Nayak is a small grower owning 1.80
hectares of land in Murnad in Kodagu, Karnataka. He
interplanted small cardamom with arecanut and followed
intensive cultivation with high level of management. His hard
work, perseverance and determination made him a success in
cardamom cultivation. During the year he produced a per
hectare yield of 2664 kgs. of cured cardamom.

FIRST PRIZE

Sri. Sunny Mathew is a small cardamom grower owning a


holding of 0.98 hectare in Anavilasom Village in Idukki district of
Kerala. The productivity of the holding is 2837kg/hectare of
cured cardamom during the season.
The high yielding cultivar viz. Njallani was used for taking up
replantation during the year 2000. Added to this, maintenance of
soil fertility through judicious application of organic manures and
systematic soil and moisture conservation practices helped him
in obtaining this remarkable achievement in productivity during

2005-06 CARDAMOM AWARD
SECOND PRIZE
Sri.V. Ravichandran is a hardworking small grower owning
2.24 hectares of land in Vandanmedu village in Idukki district
of Kerala. During the season he achieved a productivity of
2344 kgs of cured cardamom per hectare.
High yielding planting materials, effective nutrient
management, timely plant protection operations and judicious
irrigation during summer were the major factors responsible for
his commendable achievement.

SECOND PRIZE

Sri.Afssar Hussain is an enthusiastic small grower owning


two hectares of cardamom land in Ayyappankovil village in Idukki
district of Kerala. He could produce 1398.60 kgs. of cured
cardamom per hectare during the season.
The fabulous performance in achieving this much productivity
was due to the use of high yielding planting materials, application
of organic manures, timely plant protection measures and judicious
irrigation.

LARGE CARDAMOM
(2005-2006-2007)

The Large Cardamom Award was instituted by the Spices Board in 1996 to
recognize and encourage growers who have achieved high level of productivity.
The award consists of one first prize and two second prizes. The first prize
carries a cash award of Rs. 25,000/-, a citation and certificate. Each second
prize carries a cash award of Rs. 15,000/-, a citation and certificate. Winners for
the award 2005,2006 and 2007 were selected on the basis of nominations filed
and verified in 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07 respectively. During 2004-05,
there were no second prize winners and during 2006-07, only one farmer was
selected for second prize.

2004-05 LARGE CARDAMOM AWARD
FIRST PRIZE
Shri. Rohit Gurung is an elite and enthusiastic cultivator of
large cardamom since many years in the remote Gitkolbong
Village under Lava Gram Panchayat in Darjeeling district. He
tried different cultivars in his field having an extent of 1.40
hectares. During 2004 -05 season he achieved a productivity
of 1584 kg of cured large cardamom per hectare. This
commendable achievement in productivity was obtained by him
through adoption of traditional organic farming practices,
irrigation, regular and timely cultural operations like weeding,
mulching trashing and shade regulation.

FIRST PRIZE

Shri. Norbu Sherpa is a tribal small and progressive farmer


having 0.40 hectare under large cardamom in a remote village of
Lava Panchayat in Kalimpong Sub-division. He is cultivating
Varengey cultivar at a spacing of 5’X5’ since six years, with good
agricultural practices using organic manures and timely irrigation,
weeding, phytosanitory measures,mulching etc.The productivity
estimated is 1480 kgs/hectare in his cardamom plantation which
is a record in the locality.

Sri. Damber Sunuwar is a progressive small grower from
Doorkhola Busty of Kalimpong Sub division. He has 1.40
hectares under large cardamom with Varlangey and Ramsey
cultivar. He could harvest 1100 kgs/hectare of cardamom during
2005-06 season. The factors responsible for high yield are timely
replanting, application of organic manures, timely irrigation,
weeding, mulching and proper care of the plantation.

SECOND PRIZE

Sri. Sonam Wangyal Bhutia is a progressive large


cardamom grower from Sindrang Busty of Pelling. He has 0.60
hectare under large cardamom and produced 1188 kgs/hectare
of cured large cardamom during 2005-06 season using the
cultivar Golsey.
The main factors behind his achievement to increase the
productivity are by adopting the proper field operations like,
selection of high yielding planting materials, application of
decomposed cattle manure, uprooting the senile plants, proper
weeding, mulching and proper shade regulations in the Shri. Sonam Wongyal

2006-07 LARGE CARDAMOM AWARD
FIRST PRIZE
Shri.Purna Bahadur Thappa is a progressive small grower
from Gitkolbong Busty of Kalimpong sub division. He owns a
small holding of 0.80 hectare under large cardamom cultivated
with cultivar varlangey. The productivity of his holding is 1283
kgs of dry large cardamom per hectare.
The factors responsible for the high yield are timely
replanting, irrigation, application of organic manures, weeding,
mulching and proper care of the plantation.

SECOND PRIZE

Shri.Pem Samten Lepcha is a tribal small and progressive


farmer owning 1.20 hectares of land in the remote village of
Menrongong in North Sikkim. He is cultivating the cultivar Ramsey
by applying organic manures. The productivity recorded from the
plantation is 1188 kgs per hectare of cured large cardamom.
Effective soil and water conservation, application of organic
manures, regular weeding, judicious irrigation and timely plant
protection measures are the factors which contributed to his
success.

VANILLA AWARD
(2005 & 2006)
Vanilla award was instituted by the Spices Board to recognize vanilla growers
who achieved high levels of productivity. The award consists of one first
prize and two second prizes. The first prize carries a cash award of
Rs.25,000/-, a citation and certificate. Each second prize carries a cash award
of Rs.15,000/-, a citation and certificate. The winners of the Vanilla Award
2005 and 2006 were selected based on the claims filed and verified in 2004-
05 and 2005-06 respectively. During 2006-07, Vanilla Awards were not
considered due to lack of eligible applications.

FIRST PRIZE
Shri. Manoj Sebastian is a progressive vanilla grower
from Muthappanpuzha in Kozhikode District of Kerala. He
planted vanilla in an area of 0.60 hectare and the productivity
obtained by him was 1178 kgs/hectare of cured beans during
2004-05 crop season.
Application of organic inputs, proper shade management,
mulching, judicious irrigation and innovative methods of trailing
the vines helped him to achieve this success.

Shri. K.R .Umeshkumar is a progressive vanilla grower from


Shimoga District of Karnataka. He interplanted vanilla with
arecanut in 0.20 hectare. The productivity of cured vanilla beans
recorded from his plantation during the crop season was 650 kgs
per hectare. Proper shade management, mulching practices,
judicious irrigation, personal care, management techniques
followed and guidance from Spices Board were the factors behind
his success.

SECOND PRIZE
Shri. H.A.Krishnamurthy is an enthusiastic and
progressive vanilla grower from the Talamakki Village in
Chickamagalur district of Karnataka. He has maintained 0.40
hectare of vanilla during 2004-05 and obtained a productivity
of 872 kgs of cured vanilla beans per hectare. Application of
organic inputs, proper shade management, mulching, judicious
irrigation and effective methods of trailing the vines helped him
to achieve this success.

FIRST PRIZE

Shri.Baby Sebastian is a progressive small grower hailing from


Periyar village of Idukki district in Kerala. He maintains around
2000 vanilla vines in an area of 0.75 hectare. He is cultivating
crops like tea, pepper and cardamom. During the season
productivity of his vanilla plantation was 828 kgs of cured beans
per hectare.
The factors contributed to his success were application of bio-
inputs, bio-dynamic agriculture practices, timely irrigation and
proper care of the plantation particularly in pollination of the flowers.

Shri.B.N.Radhakrishna is a promising farmer owning 0.40
hectare of land in Hosahalli village of Shimoga district. The
productivity achieved was to the tune of 493 kgs per hectare.
Hard work, devotion, personal care of the plantation and
scientific management practices are the factors which
contributed to his success.

Shri.T.N.Ramesh is a progressive farmer owning one hectare


of land in Thirthamuttur village of Shimoga district. He is cultivating
300 vanilla vines in 0.20 hectare and productivity recorded per
hectare is 704 kgs of cured beans. Because of careful
management, hard work and use of organic inputs supplemented
with irrigation etc. he could obtain a higher productivity during the
crop season.

ORGANIC VANILLA AWARD
(2005-06)
Organic Vanilla Award was instituted by the Spices Board during 2005 to
recognize vanilla growers who are cultivating vanilla organically. The nominees
for the award are required to possess a valid Organic Certificate from any of
the Accredited Inspection and Certification Agency. The award consists of
one first prize and two second prizes. The first prize carries a cash award of
Rs.25,000/-, a citation and certificate. Each second prize carries a cash
award of Rs.15,000/-, a citation and certificate. The winners of the Organic
Vanilla Award for 2006 were selected based on the claims filed and verified
during 2005-06 season. During 2006-07, Organic Vanilla Awards were not
considered due to lack of eligible applications.

2005-06 ORGANIC VANILLA AWARD
FIRST PRIZE
Shri.K.T.Nagendra Rao is a pioneer vanilla cultivator owning
a holding of one hectare. in Golgar village in Chickmagalore
district of Karnataka and cultivating vanilla organically since
1989. The productivity obtained by him during the season is
400 kgs of cured beans per hectare.
The success of his cultivation depends mainly on application
of organic manure for enriching the soil and use of bio-agents
for plant protection. The farm is organically certified and the
beans produced are of good quality. Spices like pepper, nutmeg

The Trust established in 1988 in the name of late


Shri.Purushothama Rao is involved in promotion of organic
agriculture as a movement and is organizing various
researches in organic farming. The Trust own a total area
of four hectares out of which 1.40 hectare. is under organic
cultivation of vanilla intercropped with arecanut. Cultivation
is purely by organic means and is under certification.
Productivity registered in the farm is 300 kgs of cured vanilla
beans per hectare and the beans obtained are of superior
