Looking Back: Tropical Storm Amang did reach Typhoon Strength

In January 2015, Severe Tropical Storm Mekkhala also known as Tropical Storm Amang struck the

Philippines. This natural event are generated by natural hazards which destroy life and property as well.

Causes of floods include heavy rainfall, dam failures, etc. We people are well aware of the impacts caused

by flooding like loss of lives, destruction of crops, damage to property, loss of livestock, and triggering

many waterborne diseases.

Tropical Storm Amang remained inside the Philippine border for four days, displacing nearly 5,000

people and killed three people in the Bicol Region. A total of 22 highways, bridges, and spillways were

closed due to the flooding. Amang was also responsible for nine landslides, ten flooding events, and one

maritime incident. In Camarines Norte, 152 houses were destroyed, mostly in Vigan, Catanduanes, and

Daet. Regions V, VII, and VIII collectively displaced 21,867 people. Damage in the region amounted

to ₱318.7 million (US$7.13 million), stemming mostly from agriculture. In addition, the storm caused

agricultural damage of ₱30.3 million (US$678,000) in Samar. The crop damage and a subsequent drought

caused rice shortages in the country, prompting the government to import the grain in May 2015.

Throughout the country, 48 homes were destroyed while a further 490 sustained damage. Infrastructural

losses reached ₱49.7 million (US$1.11 million); repairs to roadways was quick and completed by

January 21. Tropical Storm Amang did reach typhoon strength.

Climate change, unplanned urbanization, underdevelopment/poverty, and the threat of pandemics are

just some of the problems that will shape humanitarian assistance in the future. As a result of these

aggravating factors, disasters can occur with greater frequency, complexity, and severity.

The government should take action on the approaching storm and provide information that citizens

will do to prevent greater destruction that they may inflict. And citizens should know the locations of

evacuation areas. A typhoon will still be shown on national television when it is observed. When it comes

to learning about the news, leading channels like GMA and ABS-CBN are the top contenders, but radio

stations can also help.

Many who have trained for a typhoon can only hope and pray that they can make it through safely.

During this time, several news outlets and radio stations will be broadcasting various types of information

that may impact everyone's response to a typhoon. When a person discovers that their area is in the path of

a typhoon, they must prepare for evacuations. During a typhoon, there will be a few recommendations that

will benefit everyone and their families, including following the safety protocol correctly and not being

stubborn when following authorities.
