Reflecting on Adhering to Legal Frameworks and Policies
6 A teacher demonstrates an understanding of and adherence to the legal frameworks
and policies that provide the foundations for the Alberta education system.
Student Teacher Practices
- This legal framework piece is incredibly
important and, in particular, prevalent as my
PSII has been held during the Covid-19
pandemic. This meant that I was responsible
for knowing and adhering to provincial and
school district policies in order to help prevent
the spread in the school and the larger
community.
- Adherence to the Covid-19 policies required
me to follow the district mask policies, and
implement strict sanitation guidelines.
Students also remained in their assigned
classes, and I was responsible to move from
room to room bringing my materials and
adapting to the differing environments each
period.
-During my PSII I was also required to
quarantine, despite testing negative for the
virus. I made sure to follow all of the
guidelines put forward by the province, the
district, and with the education program. I
utilized online resources to ensure I could still
do my job while ensuring others in the school
would feel both physically and emotionally
safe.
-While opinions vary on the best way to
handle Covid-19, it was essential for teachers
of the school to adhere to these safety  
measures and to present a unified front when
dealing with this pandemic. Policies are made
with the safety of both students and staff in
mind, and help provide a foundation for
everyone to feel safe enough to learn and
teach. By participating in these protocols, I
helped create an environment that allowed for
students and fellow staff to trust, learn, and
grow as we all navigated these difficult times.
Influence of Student Learning Experience
-I feel that adherence to Covid-19 policies
allowed for a positive student learning
experience during my PSII. For one thing
students were able to return to in person
classes this school year, and this has
continued to be beneficial to their own social
and educational development. This is only
possible if outbreaks and cases do not occur.
Adherence to Covid-19 policies help to
ensure everyone can continue to learn in the
best environment currently possible.
-While quarantined I was able to continue to
teach the students through online methods.
By taking myself out of the classroom and
limiting risk to students, they were able to
continue attending in person, in a stable
environment, with their peers. They were also
able to see my efforts to follow guidelines and
rules in order to keep them as healthy as
possible. This allows for students to feel that
the learning environment is safe, and helps to
take away some of the outside stressors that
could impact and deter effective learning. 
- Additionally, my continued presence in the
classroom showed them that I was committed
to the practicum and to them. That I would not
simply leave them, but be dependable.
