It is important to realize, however, that all of the activities involved in the SDLC
are highly related and interdependent. The brief description of each step is given
below:
1. Systems Investigation Phase: This phase starts with the problem (this is
usually the source of error, cost and inefficiency) or the opportunity (this is
usually the source of competitive advantage, revenue and efficiency).
Business unit is responsible for carrying out this phase and the end result of
this stage is to have a well-documented feasibility study. The feasibility study,
as an output, will be passed to the next SDLC phase; Systems Analysis
Phase.
The following table shows some critical factors for consideration under each
feasibility tests:
2. Systems Analysis Phase: This phase takes the feasibility study as the input
and prepares the functional requirement as the output. Highly expected that
this phases’ activities will be carried out by an experienced Systems Analyst /
MIS professional (who has understanding about both business and
technology).
3. Systems Design Phase: This is a technical phase mostly carried out by the
technical people such as software developers and engineers. Systems
design starts with getting the functional requirements and finished with
developing the Information Systems with proper specifications.
Once the analysis portion of the life cycle is complete, the process of systems
design can begin. During the physical design portion of this step, users and analysts
will focus on determining how the system will accomplish its objectives. This phase

Four major forms of system conversion are illustrated in following figure and
described in the table:

Direct The simplest conversion strategy, and probably the most
Conversion disruptive to the organization, is the direct cutover approach.
Using this approach, the old system is just turned off, and the new
system is turned on in its place. Although this method is the least
expensive of all available strategies, it is also the one that poses
the greatest risk of failure. Once the new system becomes
operational, the end users must cope with any errors or
dysfunctions, and depending on the severity of the problem, this
approach can have a significant effect on the quality of the work
performed. Direct conversion should be considered only in
extreme circumstances where no other conversion strategy is
viable.
Parallel At the opposite end of the risk spectrum is the parallel conversion

systems are run simultaneously until the end users and project
coordinators are fully satisfied that the new system is functioning
correctly and the old system is no longer necessary.
5. Systems Maintenance Phase: The last phase of SDLC deals with post
implementation review process to monitor, evaluate and modify business
system as needed.

The activities associated with corrective maintenance are focused on fixing bugs
and logic errors not detected during the implementation testing period.
2. Adaptive
Adaptive maintenance refers to those activities associated with modifying existing
functions or adding new functionality to accommodate changes in the business or
operating environments.
3. Perfective
Perfective maintenance activities involve changes made to an existing system that
are intended to improve the performance of a function or interface. The final
category of maintenance activities.
4. Preventive
Preventive maintenance, involves those activities intended to reduce the chances of
a system failure or extend the capacity of a current system’s useful life.
