Introduction to Dierential Equations

This assignment sheet consists of two parts: The rst one gives suggestions for the discussion during
the central exercise classes, whereas the second one comprises a set of homework assignments (that are
due to the following Tuesday at 9:00 am). Selected homework assignments will be discussed as a recap
at the beginning of the next lectures or during the next central exercise classes.

Problems for the Central Exercise Class:

Problem CE 5.1: Which of the following equations are separable?

2 2x(y + 1) · x0 − y · y 0 = 0.

2 x · x0 + a2 − x2 · y 0 = 0, where a is constant.
2 x · y 0 + y · x0 + xy(3x0 + y 0 ) = 0.
2 (e2x + 4) · y 0 = y .
Problem CE 5.2: Find the general solution of
a) y · y 0 = x + 3.
b) xy 0 = y .
Problem CE 5.3: General and specic solutions:
a) Find the general solution of y 0 = 3x·e−y and the specic solution that satises the condition
y(0) = 1.
b) Find the specic solution of y 0 = e2x+y that has y = 0 when x = 0.
Problem CE 5.4: Solve the equation y 0 = (y + 1)/(x − 1) given the boundary condition: y = 1 at
x = 0.

Problem CE 5.5: Solve the equation y 0 + 2xy = 1.

Homework Assignment due on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.:

Problem 5.1: Use separation of variables to nd all solutions of the following four ODEs
dy(x)
y 0 (x) = = y(x) · (1 + ex ) , and y 0 (x) = y(x) · (sin(x) + ex )
dx
as well as
y(x) y 2 (x) · (x − 3)
y 0 (x) = , and y 0 (x) = .
4+x x3
Problem 5.2: Oil Production I. A certain oil well that yields 400 barrels of crude oil per month
will run dry in 2 years. The price of crude oil is currently 98 USD per barrel and is expected
to rise at the constant rate of 40 cents per barrel per month. If the oil is sold as soon as it is
extracted from the ground, how much total revenue will be obtained from the well?
Problem 5.3: Oil Production II. Suppose the owner of the oil well in Problem 5.2 decides to
step up production so that 600 barrels per month are extracted but everything else remains the
same.
a) How many months pass before the well runs dry?
b) How much total revenue will be obtained from the well?
Problem 5.4: Solve the following initial-value problems.
a) x2 y 0 + 2xy = ln(x), with y(1) = 2.
b) xy 0 = y + x2 sin(x), with y(π) = 0.
