Stress is relative emphasis that may be given to certain
syllables in a word, or to certain words in phrase or
sentence. In English, stressed syllables are louder than
non-stressed syllables. Also, they are longer and have a
higher pitch.

English is a stress-timed language. That means that

syllables. Every word is made from syllables. Each word

Stress in Longer Word
(A) In three-syllable words, the stress can be anywhere;

(B) In words with four or more syllables, the stress is almost always in the middle of the word,

(C) If the word ends -tion,-sion, or -cian, and -ic, then the stress is always on the second last
syllable. For example: informatin, discussion, politician, economic, dramatic, atlantic.

(D) If a word ends with the letter -y and has three or more syllables, the the stress is two
syllables before the last one. For example: biology, luckily, activity, possibility.

(E) If a longer word is a made from a shorter root word, then the stress is generally in the
same place as the root word. For example: comfort, comfortable, discomfort, uncomfortable,
comfortably, comforting. (In all these words, the stress is in the same place as the root word,
comfort).

Sentence stress is the music of spoken English. Like word
stress, sentence stress can help us to understand spoken
English, especially when spoken fast.

Sentence stress is what gives English its rhythm or “beat”.


You remember that word stress is accent on one syllable
within a word. Sentence stress is accent on certain words
within a sentence.

1. Content words are stressed.

nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

1. Sense stress

The distribution of such stress is subject to the meaning


that the speaker wishes to convey.

The distribution of logical stress is subject to the speaker’s


will. The speaker’s puts stress on any word he wishes.

The distribution of emotional stress is when the speaker


wants to show strong emotion, he can put strong stress on
the word he wishes to emphasize.
