II . Answer the following.

1.What are luminous objects?Give examples.

Ans.Objects which give out light of their own are called luminous objects.

Ex. Stars and sun.

2.What is a shadow?

Ans. When light cannot pass through an object,the opposite side of the object where light has
not reached forms a dark region called shadow.

3. What is a sundial?

Ans.Sundials were used in ancient times to help the people know the time.

4. Give one example for pleasant and unpleasant sound.

Ans.Noise is unpleasant and music is pleasant sound.

5.What is a noise pollution?

Ans. Releasing loud sounds into the environment that can harm or disturb the existence of
other living things is called noise pollution.

6.What is the difference between luminous and non-luminous objects?


Ans.a.Objects which emit their own light are called luminous objects.

Ex. Stars

b.Objects which does not have their own light but they reflect the light of other objects are
called non-luminous objects.
Ex. moon and earth

7.Classify objects depending on how they treat light that fall on them.

Ans.The objects are classified as transparent,opaque and translucent depending on light


falling on them.

8.Write a note on shadows.

Ans.a.When opaque objects are in the path of a light ray, light cannot pass through and
shadow is formed.

b.When light cannot pass through an object, ,the opposite side of the object where light has
not reached forms a dark region.
c.Our body is an opaque object. (We cast shadows on the walls or on the ground).

9.How does a sundial work?

Ans. a.Sundials were used in ancient times to help the people know the time.

b.A sundial has a raised piece of metal ,called gnomon.


c.It sits in the middle of a dial that is marked with numbers of hours.
d.When sunlight falls on the sundial, the reflection of the gnomon on the dial will help to tell
the time approximately.

10.Write the ways in which noise pollution can be prevented or reduced.

Ans.a. During functions at home,the sound level of music must be kept at low volume so that
neighbours are not disturbed.

b.Do not burst crackers that produce loud sounds.


c.Reduce the use of horns while driving.
