Trisagion Prayer

The origin of the Trisagion prayer

The Trisagion Prayer is one of the most ancient prayers that have come down to our time in
almost unchanged form. Its origin is attributed to the ancient Christian church, according to the
instructions of John Chrysostom. The first version that came into use was in Greek, but soon the
text of the Trisagion prayer in Russian appeared thanks to the Archbishop of Constantinople St.
Proclus in 437-447, so it is not known for certain how long the Greek translation was used in
Russian Orthodox churches.

According to church legends, in 438, a few weeks before Easter, a strong earthquake occurred in
Constantinople, right during the procession of the cross through the city streets. At that moment,
one little boy from the crowd soared into the sky and heard the singing of angels. The angels told
him a prayer - the Trisagion, about which he told everyone as soon as he came down to earth. All
people, together with the Patriarch, immediately began to sing it, adding the words - "have mercy
on us." After that, the earthquake immediately stopped. Having learned about such a miracle and
divine deliverance from the earthquake, Empress Pulcheria issued a decree that the Trisagion
prayer should become part of the daily worship.

But this is not the only version of the origin of prayer, since other church sources say that prayer
took place in the 5th century AD, during the fourth Ecumenical Council. According to some
ancient monks, including the 16th century monk Job, prayer came about by simplifying common
church chants.

It is not known for certain which of these versions is realistic. But be that as it may, the text of
the prayer changed several times over the years, until it reached our time in its form.
How the Trisagion prayer helps

The Trisagion prayer is a powerful talisman that protects a person from various adversities.
Many Orthodox Christians prefer to read it along with other daily prayers. According to church
leaders, it is one of the most important prayers that an Orthodox person needs to know. Since

anxieties. In the Orthodox chronicles, several cases are dated about how, after reading this
prayer, various miracles occurred, including the healing of diseases.

Among the people, this prayer is known as: "Holy God" and is mentioned more than once in
church literature. In ancient times, it was often used as a parting word on a long journey. It is
also used during all church services, especially on holidays, including Easter, Trinity and

There are many prayers that it is customary to read in various life difficulties or when you want
to ask for help and support. In this article we will discuss the text of the Trisagion prayer, and
talk about when and why it can be read.

Description and power of prayer

This is a short appeal to God, during which the phrase "Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal,
have mercy on us!" Is pronounced three times. These words are accompanied by bows, because a
person bows before God, asking him for mercy and protection.

According to legend, this text was heard by a little boy from the angels themselves. That is why
its other name is "Angelic Song". They say that a very strong earthquake began in
Constantinople, where the boy lived, but the child himself was not injured, because higher forces
lifted him into the air. After that, angels appeared to him, and when the child told the adults
about this, they took it as a sign.

The earthquake still did not want to stop, and then the people of Constantinople repeated three
times the words spoken by the angels to the boy, and added at the end "Have mercy on us!" As
soon as the words were spoken, the earthquake miraculously stopped.

Naturally, the trinity was not chosen by chance, because behind each of these appeals to the
Lord, one of his three incarnations is hidden. So, the first words, of course, are intended for God
the Father, the Mighty appeal is for God the Son, and we call the Holy Spirit the Immortal. Thus,
we dedicate our words to each of the Lord's triune incarnations.

This prayer is not meant to ask the Lord for anything. They resort to it when a person praises the
Almighty. The main thing is to read it with a pure heart and faith in your soul, and then it will be
heard.

In this video you can listen to the audio recording of the prayer "Holy God" (Trisagion).

The text of the prayer "Trisagion according to our Father"

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, both now and forever and forever and ever.
Amen.
Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us; Lord, cleanse our sins; Master, forgive our iniquity; Holy
One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name's sake.

Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the
Holy Spirit, both now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
as in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also
leave our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

To the Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Soul of truth, who is everywhere and fulfill
everything, the treasure of the good and life to the Giver, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us
from all defilement, and save, Beloved, our souls.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

(Heavenly King, Comforter Spirit of truth, who is everywhere and fills everything, the source of
all good and the Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all sin and save, O
Good One, our souls.)

To the king - King; Comforter - Comforter; To the soul of truth - Spirit of truth, Spirit of
truth; Izhe - Which the; Syy - existing, located; do everything - all filling; treasure of the good
- a treasury, a repository of all blessings, all good; life to the Giver - Giver of life; come and
move in - come and get in us - in us; from all filth - from all impurity, that is, from all sins;
Closer - good, kind.

In this prayer we pray to the Holy Spirit, the third Person of the Holy Trinity.

We call her the Holy Spirit King of Heaven because He, as a true God, equal to God the Father
and God the Son, invisibly reigns over us, owns us and the whole world. We call him The
comforter because He comforts us in our sorrows and misfortunes, as He also comforted the
apostles on the 10th day after the ascension of Jesus Christ to heaven.

We call him By the spirit of truth (This is what the Savior Himself called Him), because He,
like the Holy Spirit, teaches everyone only one truth, the truth, only that which is useful for us
and serves to our salvation.

He is God, and He is everywhere and fills everything with Himself: like, everywhere and do
everything ... He, as the ruler of the whole world, sees everything and, where needed, gives. He
is treasure of the good, that is, the keeper of all good deeds, the source of all the good that only
we need to have.

We call the Holy Spirit life by the Giver , because everything in the world lives and is moved by
the Holy Spirit, that is, everything receives life from Him, and especially people receive from
Him spiritual, holy and eternal life beyond the grave, being cleansed through Him from their
sins.
If the Holy Spirit possesses such wondrous properties: it is everywhere, it fills everything with
His grace and gives life to everyone, then we turn to Him with the following requests: Come and
live in us , that is, abide constantly in us, as in your temple; cleanse us from all filth , that is,
sin, make us holy, worthy of Your stay in us, and save, good, our souls from sins and those
punishments that occur for sins, and through this grant us the Kingdom of Heaven.

QUESTIONS: To whom do we turn with this prayer? What is the Holy Spirit of the Holy
Trinity? What is He called in this prayer? Why - the Heavenly King, the Comforter, the Spirit of
truth, who is everywhere, filling everything? What are we asking Him for? What does it mean:
come and dwell in us? and cleanse from all filthiness? and save, Blazhe, our souls?

Angelic song to the Most Holy Trinity, or "Trisagion"

(Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us).

Strong - strong; immortal - undying, eternal.

It is called the Angelic Song because it is sung by the holy angels, surrounding the throne of God
in heaven. People who believe in Christ began to use it 400 years after the birth of Christ. There
was a strong earthquake in Constantinople, from which houses and villages were destroyed.
Frightened, Tsar Theodosius II and the people turned to God in prayer. During this common
prayer, one pious youth (boy), in full view of everyone, was lifted up to heaven by invisible
power, and then unharmed again lowered to earth. He told the people around him that he had
heard in heaven how the holy angels sang: Holy God, holy Mighty, holy Immortal ... The
moved people, repeating this prayer, added: have mercy on us and the earthquake stopped.

In this prayer By god we call the first Person of the Holy Trinity - God the Father; Strong - God
the Son, because He is as almighty as God the Father, although in humanity He suffered and
died; Immortal - the Holy Spirit, because He is not only eternal Himself, like the Father and the
Son, but also gives life and immortal life to people to all creatures.
