Living Systems

The Relationship among Organisms

Producer
They are organisms that make their
own food. These are often green
plants that get their energy from the
sun. They are at the bottom of the
food chain.
What are some examples?
Consumer
These are organisms that eat
other organisms because they
do not have the ability to make
their own food. We an
examples of consumers.
Decomposer

These are microorganisms that are able to break down dead living
things into smaller parts. During this time the nutrients are found in
the decomposing living things are returned to the soil.
Examples:
● Mushrooms Summarize why
● Bacteria decomposers are
● Fungi important to the
● Mold environment
Herbivore
A herbivore is a type of consumer that only
eats plants.
What is an example of a herbivore?
Carnivore
A type of consumer that only eats other animals.
Omnivore
A type of consumer that eats both plants and animals.

What are humans: omnivores, herbivores, or

carnivores?
Predator
An animals that often captures and eats other
animals
Prey
An animals that is hunted, captured and eaten
by another animal.
Aquatic

habitats what feature water related food chains

Terrestrial
habitats that have food chains that contain plants
and animals found on land.
Food Chains

A diagram that shows how energy is

passed from producers to consumers. The
arrows show the direction of the transfer of
energy. A food chain shows which
organisms consume which organisms or
plants for energy.
Thinking Time
Pair up with your science partner, answer the question,
actively listen to their responses.

1. Where do humans fit on the food chain?

2. Where do you think most energy is in a food chain?
3. Why do larger organisms often eat larger prey or a larger
amount of prey?
4. Can an organism be both prey and a predator?
5. What are some physical adaptations that predators have?
6. What are some adaptations that prey have to avoid being
eaten.
7. Why would happen if the decomposers disappeared?
