Aquaculture
- Freshwater Aquaculture

Picture showing fink in a water tank

Freshwater aquaculture refers to raising and breeding aquatic animals and

plants under controlled conditions in farms utilizing ponds, reservoirs, lakes,
rivers, and other inland waterways in fresh, brackish, or marine culture.

 Mariculture

Picture of water tanks in the ocean

Mariculture is a branch of aquaculture that involves the cultivation of aquatic

organisms in their natural habitat for commercial purpose. It occurs in saltwater
habitats, unlike fish farming. Sometimes, organisms are grown in hatcheries then
released into their wild settings or in floating cages

 Fish farming

Farm fishing is the rearing of certain fish species under controlled conditions in artificial
freshwater ponds.

Qualities of a good fish pond

1. Area should not be prone to flooding

2. Situated along an irrigation channel

3. Relatively flat lands are used for these ponds

4. Ponds are best built in areas with a high water-table.

5. Ponds have deep and shallow ends.

Differences between Aquaculture and Mariculture

Both aquaculture and Mariculture are related to cultivating aquatic products under

controlled conditions

However, Mariculture involves growing fish in saltwater whilst aquaculture pertains to

freshwater.

Moreover, Mariculture is simply a branch of aquaculture.

It involves cultivation of marine organisms in the open ocean or in an enclosed section

of the ocean.

 Hydroponics

Hydroponics involves the growing of plants in water with the use of an artificial system.

It is the growing of crops without soil. The roots grow in a liquid nutrient solution with or

without a solid substrate. The benefits of this system include:

1. Saving space

2. Faster plant growth

3. Bigger yields per square foot

4. Less water is wasted due to evaporation and runoff

5. No soil erosion

6. Grow indoors

7. No weeds

8. Nutrient control
