means prayer or favor, or a dialectic variation of “been” or “bean”, which refers to
voluntary help given by neighbors towards the accomplishment of a particular task. No

Question No. 4
SEEN COMPREHENSION
Most ordinary students find their optimum at about five hours a day. Yours may be a
little more or a little less – but if you get in five hours’ good work a day, you will be doing
well.
Now what are you doing with yourself when you are not working? Before examination,
some students do nothing at all except sit in a chair and worry. Here is another
misunderstanding. People often think that the mind works like the body; it does not. If
one wanted to conserve physical energy in order to cut the maximum amount of
firewood, one would lie flat on a bed and rest when one wans’t chopping. But the mind
cannot rest. Even in sleep, you dream, even if you forget your dreams. The mind is always
turning. It gets its relaxation only by “variety”. That is what makes the mind rest.

i) Refer to the title of the text from which the passage is taken.
This passage has been taken from the text “How to Study” from Oxford English
Book for undergraduates.
ii) What is the optimum of average for average student for the satisfactory output?
Optimum level for the most of the ordinary students is at about five hours a day.
It can be different; little more or a little less for others. But if a person does good

work in a day during five hours; he is doing well.
iii) Does the mind work along with the body?
No, the mind does not work along with the body. It keeps functioning even
when we are sleeping. Dreams that we remember or not, are the outcome of
brain working at a time when our body is relaxing and we are fast asleep.

Question No. 5
Write a letter to the curriculum department and give reasons for revising and
updating the course of “English for Undergraduates”.
OR
Prepare a CV and a covering letter for applying as an anchor person of a renowned
talk show of a TV Channel.

The Director,
Sindh Curriculum Department,
Karachi

Subject: UPDATE AND REVISE CURRICULUM

Dear Sir,
With the column of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to divert the attention of
concerned authorities towards the serious issue of old and outdated curriculum being
taught to undergraduate students in various public colleges of Karachi.
In 21st century, when the first world countries are working towards extensive space
exploration and reducing the costs of space travel along with Artificial Intelligence and
Nanotechnology research, students in Pakistan are lagging behind while studying the
same old and outdated English course. It is mentioned here with sad heart that we are
studying English course which had already been studied by our parents and even
grandparents. Many things have changed in the world since then, but there is no useful
information being provided to the students. Ages old course is like stagnant water which
only produces smell and diseases. English syllabus without poetry and novels / dramas
is like a life without soul.
Not only students, but teachers also suffer as they have memorized the lessons being
taught since decades and there’s no concept of faculty development due to this problem.
If the teachers do not prepare or study prior to delivering lectures into the class, they
will never have an opportunity to work hard themselves. Same old lectures and copy
pasted materials are distributed among students at various coaching centers.
You are, therefore, requested to kindly look into the matter and initiate a process of
revising and updating the decades old syllabus of English, so that the learners and
teachers both get benefitted from the modern knowledge.

Yours Sincerely,

A concerned undergraduate Student
