WRITE AN ESSAY ON ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:

PROBLEMS OF WORKING WOMEN IN PAKISTAN

Men and women are pillars of society; without their equal participation in all spheres of
life, no society can progress. As far as the capabilities of women are concerned, they are no
less than men. They are performing their role as doctors, teachers, lawyers, and many other
fields of life but still society is not giving them their legitimate right and status and working
women are facing a lot of problems in the country. They are ignored in the decision making
process and they are not promoted to higher positions even if they deserve to be, what to
talk about the glass ceiling of underpayment of wages and salary as well.
Domestic life of a working woman is also not smooth. She does not get any reprieve from
household work because of her office job. She has to get up early in the morning to finish
her household chores, get the children ready for school, prepare breakfast and lunch for
her husband and school going children, clean the house before she is ready to go to office.
The western concept of the husband helping in household chores has not taken roof in our
country yet. When she comes back in the evening she has to help her children with their
studies, prepare evening meals and try and look pleasant in front of family members and
guests. Nobody bothers to find out her requirement to be fulfilled. Nobody shows any
consideration for the poor working woman. She is sandwiched between two worlds and
reduced to a virtual robot, trying to perform her functions and duties to the best of her
abilities. Woe betides her if she falters even once from the set path.
Women in Pakistan also face problems like sexual abuse and physical harassment. There
has been recent legislation that has afforded them protection but it has not been
implemented properly. Women will not be able to utilize their talents properly if they do
not feel safe in their workplace. An attitude change is needed across the board and a good
first step to effect that would be to implement existing women-friendly legislation in letter
and spirit.
