The global anti-corruption organization Transparency International (TI) has reported corruption is
increasing around the world. A “TI”press release reports there is serious corruption in most of the world’s
countries. TI’s yearly survey questions business people and public officials to find out how corrupt a country
is. Bangladesh and Chad finished bottom as the most corrupt countries, while Iceland finished top. Finland and
New Zealand were the second and third cleanest nations. Corruption is declining in Turkey and Nigeria, but
increasing in Russia and Canada.
TI chairman Peter Eigen said: “Corruption is a major cause of poverty as well as a barrier to [reducing]
it.” He also said corruption and poverty lock people in a “cycle of misery”. Mr. Eigen warned corruption must be
reduced to free people from poverty. David Nussbaum, TI’s chief executive, stated: “Corruption isn’t a
natural disaster: it is the cold…theft of opportunity from the men, women and children who are least able to
protect themselves.” He also said leaders needed to keep their promises to help poor people. The world has
made a target to halve extreme poverty by 2015.

I think that ethics of social media is a sensible topic. For journalists, it is the making of great effort
to be accurate, to offer a diversity of viewpoints and to check the news sources.
Journalistic ethics is pretty much the same online as in print or broadcast: don’t use sources illegally,
tell readers how you got your information, don’t accept gifts or money for coverage, tell the truth, be honest
and be accurate. Besides, journalists online mustn’t copy others’ work and pretend it is theirs. But one of the
key questions is: if a journalist offers an opinion on Twitter, is that unethical? Does that violate some type of
rule?
Personally, I think that journalists must follow a basic code of ethics. First, you mustn’t harm your
audience and try in every part of your life to avoid doing anything that would hurt another person. To me, this
doesn’t mean writing only good or happy news. But it does mean getting as many sides of the story as possible
before writing about something that could put anybody in a bad light. It also means giving a source an
adequate chance to respond, not just calling ones. Don’t put anything on the Internet (Twitter, Facebook) that
you’d be embarrassed to see on the front page of The New York Times. That means nothing “inappropriate”,
nothing that accuses another person of something without verified support. If you make a mistake, admit it.
If you accidently hurt someone, say you’re sorry and try to fix it. To me, this doesn’t mean you pretend you
don’t have opinions. You’re just honest with yourself about how what you’re thinking shapes your worldview.

Everyone agrees that business managers must understand finance and marketing. But is it necessary
for them to study ethics?
Managers who answer in the negative generally base their thinking on one of three rationales. They
may simply say that they have no reason to be ethical. They see why they should make a profit, and most
agreed they should do so legally. But why should they be concerned about ethics as long as they are making
money and staying out of jail?
Other managers recognize that they should not be unethical but identify their ethical duty through
making a legal profit for the firm.
A third group of managers affirmed that ethical duty goes further than what is required by law. But
they still insist that there is no point in studying ethics. Character is formed in childhood, not at school.
As for motivation, good behaviour often brings a reward, but not every time. If it were always in one's
interest to be good, there would be no need for ethics. We could simply act selfishly and forget about
obligation.

"Child labour" is, generally speaking, work for children that harms them or exploits them in some way
(physically, mentally, morally or by blocking access to education).
Not all work is bad for children. Some social scientists point out that some kinds of work may be
completely harmless, except for one thing about the work that makes it exploitative. For instance, a child who
delivers newspapers before school might actually benefit from learning how to work, gaining responsibility and
earn a bit of money. But what if the child is not paid ? Then he or she is being exploited.
In Africa, one child in three is at work, and in Latin America, one child in five works. In 2000, the
International Labour Organization estimated that 246 million child workers aged between 5 and 17 were
involved in child labour. Moreover, some 8.4 million children were engaged in the so-called ‘unconditional’ worst
forms of child labour, which include forced labour, the use of children in armed conflict, trafficking in
children and in their organs.
One maysaythat poverty is widely considered the top reason why children work at inappropriate jobs for
their ages. However there are other reasons as lack of good schools and day care, lack of other services such
as health care and familyproblems.

Read the text carefully and do the following questions
Counterfeit consumer goods are goods, often of inferior quality, made or sold under another's brand
name without the brand owner’s authorization. Sellers of such goods may infringe on either the trade
mark, patent or copyright of the brand owner by passing off its goods as made by the brand owner.
Counterfeit products exist in virtually every area, including food, clothes, shoes, pharmaceuticals,
electronics, auto parts, toys, and currency. The spread of counterfeit goods is worldwide, and in 2015
the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimated the global value of all
counterfeit goods reached $1.77 trillion, up from approximately $550 billion in 2008. Counterfeit products
make up 5 to 7% of world trade and has cost an estimated 2.5 million jobs worldwide, with 750,000 jobs lost in
the U.S. alone.[8] However, the Government Accountability Office found that many estimated figures were
unreliable.

In broad terms, political corruption is the misuse of public (governmental) power for illegitimate,
usually secret, private advantage. All forms of government are vulnerable to political corruption. Forms
of corruption vary, but the most common are bribery, extortion, influence peddling, fraud, embezzlement,
and nepotism. While corruption often facilitates criminal enterprise such as drug trafficking and money
laundering, it is not restricted to these organized crime activities, and it does not always support or shield
other crimes. What constitutes corruption differs depending on the country or jurisdiction. Certain political
funding practices that are legal in one place may be illegal in another.

Some specialists are working hard to combat fraud. When fraud becomes endemic in a nation, it
can produce radical political changes that bring to power leaders who are hostile to market economies.
Executives who strip corporations of money for their own use (called “looting control frauds” in
criminological circles) use accounting fraud as a weapon of choice to inflate income and net worth.
They also use normal corporate mechanisms to convert corporate assets to their own personal benefit
before the company collapses.
Looters are succeeding in various parts of the globe because of several factors. The expansion of
privatization of state-owned enterprises (SOES) over the last two decades has led to a dramatic global
upsurge in commercial enterprises, which increases the potential for private-sector looting. The
mishandling of privatization creates the incentives for looting.
We cannot win a decisive battle against fraud. We need to be eternally vigilant against fraud and
work cooperatively with other nations. The Institute for Fraud Prevention (IFP) can help build those
alliances.
